Flight Plans1. Using the four functions as your guide, what challenges would Jeff Bourk face in managing the Branson Airport? While managers are called upon to perform all the basic functions of management, planning, organizing, leading and controlling, most top managers and CEOs focus on planning. His biggest job is setting the strategy and mission of the airport. 2. Again, using the four functions as your guide, do you think the managerial challenges Jeff Bourk faced when getting the airport up and running are different from what he faces now in actually overseeing the airports operation? Explain. As organizations move from the planning stage toward implementation, the other functions of management become important. Organizing employees to build the airport and then running the day to day operations. Leading will also become more important as motivation of airport employees needs to be sustained. Finally, control mechanisms need to be in placeFaded Signal1. What strategic mistakes did Nokia make in the U.S. market?Nokias biggest mistake in the US was that it thought it knew better what the customer wanted than the customers themselves. Nokia neglected the growing fondness for apps and touch screens and believed that its products were superior. Another mistake has to do with the different technologies used by cellphones (GSM vs. CDMA)4. How could Nokia have done better at using strategic management? What does this case story tell you about strategic management?Obviously, Nokia made the mistake of underestimating the competition (i.e. Apple) and not paying attention to the customer. When companies fail to take these considerations into account when determining their strategy, then they are sure to failA New Kind of Structure1. Describe and evaluate what Pfizer is doing. What Jordan Cohen has created at Pfizer is a network organization. Its a form of the boundaryless organization structure where company employees concentrate on the important aspects of the job, i.e. those elements that are related to the companys core competencies, and other tasks are outsourced to another organization. 3. Do you think this arrangement would work for other types of organizations? Why or why not?The network organization design used by Pfizer has helped to balance recent layoffs the company experienced after a nearly $4 billion yearly budget cut. While this program has been a success for Pfizer, it may not be realistic for other companies that either (a) have not experienced such deep cuts in personnel, or (b) have such high personnel costs.Best Practices at Best Buy2. Using one or more motivation theories from the chapter, explain why you think ROWE works. This program fits in with several theories of motivation, Theory Y giving employee more discretion in what they do in their jobs and making work more challenging, Goal Setting by allowing employees to participate more in the goal setting process as far as the conditions of work, then employees are more likely to accept and accomplish the goal. Expectancy Theory this program uses some aspects of goal setting, generating expectancies for employees and establishing outcomes.5. Whats your interpretation of the statement that “Work isnt a place you goits something you do”? Do you agree? Why or why not? Many employees see their contributions to their employers based on the amount of time they put in, not the amount of effort. Just being at work does not help the organization accomplish their goals. Once employees see that an organizations survival depends on work being done, then they see the benefit of losing the focus on time and placeGrowing Leaders2.What leadership models/theories/issues do you see in this case? List and describe. Charismatic leadership; Visionary leadership 3.Take each of the six leadershi
