1Mr Wu Mi is like nothing on earth: once seen, never forgotten. There are some people one has to be introduced to a hundred times, and on the hundredth and one time one has to be introduced again. Their faces are so ordinary; no mannerisms, no “anything”, just plain Jack, Tom and Harry. But Mr Wus face is worth a fortune: it is peculiar to the point of caricature. A head shaped like a bomb, and just as suggestively explosive, gaunt wan in color, with hair threatening to break out all over the face, but always kept well within bounds by a clean shave every morning, rugged, with very prominent cheek-bones and sunken cheeks, and eyes which stare at one like glowing coals - all this set on a neck too long by half, and a thin body, as strong and as little elastic as rod of steel. 吳宓先生可謂當今世上獨一無二：你見過一面，就永世難忘。有些人即使被介紹過一百次后，一百零一次見面時還需再介紹。他們的臉實在是太平凡了：毫無個性可言，簡直就是“一無所有”，僅僅是平常人張三、李四或王五罷了。而吳先生的相貌可謂是得天獨厚：奇絕得猶如一幅漫畫。他的腦袋型似一枚快要爆炸的炸彈，面容蒼白、憔悴。胡須有蔓延全臉之勢，但是每天造成都要刮得干干凈凈。他面容粗獷，顴骨高起，兩頰深陷，一雙眼睛好似燃燒的炭火，灼灼逼人。所有的這一切都安在一個過長的脖子上。他身材瘦高，但同樣強壯的像一根難以伸縮的鋼棍。翻譯日志當過北京大學英文系主任的溫源寧，1934年有一篇著名文章Mr Wu Mi，a Scholar and a Gentleman（吳宓先生，一位學者和君子），發(fā)表在中國評論周報的“親切寫真”欄目。劈頭一句便是“Mr Wu Mi is like nothing on earth：once seen，never forgotten.”。 吳宓(1894-1978)，陜西省涇陽縣人。字雨僧、玉衡，筆名余生，中國現(xiàn)代著名西洋文學家、國學大師、詩人。國立東南大學(49年更名南京大學)文學院教授(1926-1928) ，國立西南聯(lián)合大學外文系教授，1941年當選教育部部聘教授。清華大學國學院創(chuàng)辦人之一，學貫中西，融通古今，被稱為中國比較文學之父。與陳寅恪、湯用彤并稱“哈佛三杰”。著作有吳宓詩集、文學與人生、吳宓日記等。這是一篇人對吳宓先生肖像的描寫，通過分析，這段材料大的語言比較幽默，生動形象的描繪出了吳宓先生的頭部特征，所以在翻譯過程中也要把其中的幽默成分恰如其分的譯出來。這樣的描寫很讓吳宓本人生氣，在日記里痛罵溫源寧是“刻薄小人”。開頭首先對吳宓做了一個概括，從總體上表達了他與其他人的不同，從這過渡到對他面部及其他部位的描寫，運用了比喻、夸張的比喻手法。第一句的翻譯強調(diào)了世上只有一個吳宓先生，強調(diào)了他的獨特性，所以我把它以為了“獨一無二”。第三句just plain Jack, Tom and Harry，我譯為僅僅是平常人張三、李四或王五罷了。因為如果直譯，譯成僅僅是平常人杰克、湯姆或亨利罷了，不符合漢語的說法，這句話所要表達的是其他人沒有什么特點，就是與大家一樣的尋常人，漢語中經(jīng)常用張三李四來代替一些不知道確切名字的平常人。But Mr Wus face is worth a fortune: it is peculiar to the point of caricature. worth a fortune 我采用了意譯，從字面上理解是具有價值，但是放在這里不太恰當，所以我翻譯成得天獨厚。 Hair是頭發(fā)，根據(jù)這句話所要表達的意思，頭發(fā)不可能長得滿臉都是，所以我譯成胡須。 Threatening:危險的，脅迫的，譯成這樣不太適合，我覺得不必直白的非要譯出來。Rugged崎嶇的，凹凸不平的，也形容（男子）粗獷的。Stare at one凝視著某人，在這里想表達的是吳宓的眼睛很有神。賞析: 林語堂譯吳宓篇1) 林語堂譯本: 世上只有一個吳雨生，叫你一見不能忘.江楓譯本:吳宓先生,舉世無雙,見過一次,永生難忘. 原文:Mr. Wu Mi is like nothing on earth: once seen, never forgotten.2)林語堂譯本: 雨生的臉到是一種天生稟賦，恢奇得像一幅諷刺畫.江楓譯本:吳先生的相貌卻價值連城，怪異得就像一幅漫畫原文:Mr. Wus face is worth a fortune: it is peculiar to the point of caricature.3)林語堂譯本: 腦袋形似一顆炸彈，而一樣的有爆炸性. 江楓譯本: 腦袋的外形像顆炸彈，也像炸彈一樣隨時都有可能爆炸.原文: A head shaped like a bomb, and just as suggestively explosive.4)林語堂譯本: 面是瘦黃，胡須幾有隨時蔓延全局之勢，但是每晨刮得整整齊齊. 江楓譯本:憔悴，蒼白，頭發(fā)似乎就要披散下來，虧得天天早上都要剃須，還保持著一張臉面清楚的邊界.原文:. gaunt, wan in color,with hair threatening to break out all over the face, but always kept well within bounds by a clean shave every morning5)林語堂譯本: 面容險峻，顴骨高起，兩頰瘦削 江楓譯本:臉上多皺，顴骨高聳，兩頰下陷 原文:.rugged, with very prominent cheek-bones and sunken cheeks6)林語堂譯本: 一對眼睛亮晶晶的像兩粒灼光的煤炭 江楓譯本: 盯著人看的一雙眼睛像是燒紅了的兩粒煤球 原文: and eyes which stare at one like glowing coals7)林語堂譯本: 這些都裝在一個太長的脖子上及一副像枝銅那樣結(jié)實的身材上江楓譯本: 這一切全都支撐在比常人長一半的脖頸上，瘦削的軀體活像一根堅固、梆硬的鋼條原文: all this set on a neck too long by half: and a thin body, as strong and as little elastic as a rod of steel 2He wasnt sure what had awakened him.
