2、ards even when making life ' s hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or violate other ethical sta ndards? We feel disappo in ted in ourselves and ashamed. But a lapse of in tegrity also affects our relati o
3、n shipswith others.Trust is esse ntial in any importa nt relati on ship, whetherpers onalor professi on al.Who can trust some one who isdish on est or un fair? Thus, in tegrity must be one of our most importa nt goals. Risky Busin ess We are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decisi
4、on-making process has been undermined by stress or peer pressure. The real test of character is whether we can learn from our mistake, by un dersta nding why we acted as we did, and the n explori ng ways to avoid similar problems in the future.Making ethicaldecisions is a critical part of avoiding f
5、uture problem s.Wet see themust lear n to recog nize risks, because if we canrisks we ' re taking, we can ' t make responsible choices. To iden tify risks, we n eed to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doesn' t know the rules about plagiarism may accide ntall
6、y use words or ideas without giving proper credit, or one who fails to keep careful research notes mayuninten ti on allyfail to quote and cite sources as required.But the fact that such a violation is unintentional does not excuse the misc on duct. Ignorance is not a defe nse. But Everybody Does It
7、Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts, but man age to fool themselves about the risks they ' re tak ing by using excuses: Every one else does it, I ' m not hurting anyone, or I really need this grade. Excuses can get very elaborate: I know I ' m looking at another
8、39; s exam, even though I ' m supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that ' s not cheating because I ' mjust checking my answers, not copying. Wemust be honest about our actions, and avoid excuses.If we fool ourselves in to believ ing we' re not doing anythingwrong, we can
9、9; t see the real choice we ' re making -and that leads to bad decisi ons.To avoid fooli ng yourself,watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public, and anyone could be watching overyour shoulder. Would you feel proud or ashamedof your actions? If you

14、e. Acheater doesn' t learn from the test, depriving him/herself of an educati on. Cheati ng un derm ines con fide nee and in depe nden ce: the cheater is a fraud, and knows that without dish on esty, he/she would have failed. Cheat ing destroys self-esteem and in tegrity, leav ing the cheater as
15、hamed, guilty, and afraid of getting caught. Worst of all, a cheater who doesn' t get caught the first time usually cheats aga in, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems easier. This slippery slope of erodi ng ethics and bigger risks leads only to disaster. Eventual
16、ly, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the con seque nces. Stude nts have been dismissed from school because they didn ' t get this simple message:Honestyis theONLY policy that works.Cheati ng Hurts Others, TooCheaters ofte n feelinvisible, as if their actions d
17、on' t count and don ' t reallyhurt anyone. But in dividualchoices have a profo und cumulativeeffect. Cheati ng can spread like a disease, and a cheater can encourage others just by being seen from across the room. Recent statistics suggest 30% or more of college stude nts cheat. If a class i

21、, or medic ine from others, drive across a bridge, get on a plane, go to the dentist-the list is endless. There are many examples of the vast harm that is caused when individualsforget or ignore theeffect their dish on esty can have. The sav ings and loa n sca ndal, the stock market and junk bond sw
