3、ywarmpartofmylifeatthepresenttime.formyundergraduatework,iwenttoOklahomastateuniversityandgraduatedfromtherein1977.iamattachingtothisstatementacopyofmyresumeforfurtherdetailsofmyeducation.igraduatedfromtheuniversitywithacademichonorsandproceededtotheyalelawschool,whereireceivedmyjddegreein1980.upong

4、raduationfromlawschool,ibecameapracticinglawyerwiththeWashington,de,firmofward,hardraker,andross.in1981,iwasintroducedtonowjudgethomasbyamutualfriend,judgethomastoldmethathewasanticipatingapoliticalappointment,andheaskedifiwouldbeinterestedinworkingwithhim.hewas,infact,appointedasassistantsecretaryo

5、feducationforcivilrights,afterhehadtakenthatpost,heaskedifiwouldbecomehisassistant,andiacceptedthatposition.inmyearlyperiodthere,ihadtwomajorprojects,thefirstwasanarticleiwroteforjudgethomas*signatureontheeducationofminoritystudents,thesecondwastheorganizationofaseminaronhigh-riskstudentswhichwasaba

7、workingthere,heaskedmetogooutsociallywithhim.whathappenednextandtellingtheworldaboutitarethetwomostdifficultthings-experiencesofmylife,itisonlyafteragreatdealofagonizingconsiderationandsleeplenumber-agreatnumberofsleeplenightstha(tiamabletotalkoftheseunpleasantmatterstoanyonebutmyclosefriends.idecli

8、nedtheinvitationtogooutsociallywithhimandexplainedtohimthatithoughtitwouldjeopardizewhatatthetimeiconsideredtobeaverygoodworkingrelationship.ihadanormalsociallifewithothermenoutsideoftheoffice,ibelievedthen,asnow,thathavingasocialrelationshipwithapersonwhowassupervisingmyworkwouldbeill-advised.iwasv

9、eryuncomfortablewiththeideaandtoldhimso.ithoughtthatbysayingnoandexplainingmyreasonsmyemployerwouldabandonhissocialsuggestions,however,tomyregret,inthefollowingfewweeks,hecontinuedtoaskmeoutonseveraloccasions,hepressedmetojustifymyreasonsforsayingnotohim.theseincidentstookplaceinhisofficeormine,they

10、wereintheformofprivateconversationswhichwouldnothavebeenoverheardbyanyoneelse.myworkingrelationshipbecameevenmorestrainedwhenjudgethomasbegantouseworksituationstodiscuse-x.ontheseoccasions,hewouldcallmeintohisofficeforreportsoneducationissuesandprojects,orhemightsuggestthat,becauseofthetimepressures

11、ofhisschedule,wegotolunchtoagovernmentcafeteria,afterabriefdiscussionofwork,hewouldturntheconversationtoadiscussionofse-xualmatters.hisconversationswereveryvivid,hespokeaboutactsthathehadseeninpornographicfilmsinvolvingsuchmattersaswomenhavingse-xwithanimalsandfilmsshowinggroupse-xorrapescenes,hetal

25、tionswereveryvivid,hespokeaboutactsthathehadseeninpornographicfilmsinvolvingsuchmattersaswomenhavingsexwithanimalsandfilmsshowinggroupsexorrapescenes,hetalkedaboutpornographicmaterialsdepictingindividualswithlargepenisesorlargebreastsinvolvedinvarioussexacts.onseveraloccasions,thomastoldmegraphicall

26、yofhisownsexualprowess.becauseiwasextremelyuncomfortabletalkingaboutsexwithhimatallandparticularlyinsuchagraphicway,itoldhimthatididnotwanttotalkaboutthesesubjects,iwouldalsotrytochangethesubjecttoeducationmattersortononsexualpersonalmatterssuchashisbackgroundorhisbeliefs,myeffortstochangethesubject

27、wererarelysuccessful.throughouttheperiodoftheseconversations,healsofromtimetotimeaskedmeforsocialengagements,myreactiontotheseconversationswastoavoidthembyeliminatingopportunitiesforustoengageinextendedconversations,thiswasdifficultbecauseatthetimeiwashisonlyassistantattheofficeofeducation-orofficef

28、orcivilrights.duringthelatterpartofmytimeatthedepartmentofeducation,thesocialpressuresandanyconversationofhisoffensivebehaviorended,ibeganbothtobelieveandhopethatourworkingrelationshipcouldbeaproper,cordial,andprofessionalone.whenjudgethomaswasmadechairoftheeeoc,ineededtofacethequestionofwhethertogo

29、withhim.iwasaskedtodoso,andidid.theworkitselfwasinteresting,andatthattimeitappearedthatthesexualovertureswhichhadsotroubledmehadended,ialsofacedtherealisticfactthatihadnoalternativejob.whileimighthavegonebacktoprivatepractice,perhapsinmyoldfirmoratanother,iwasdedicatedtocivilrightswork,andmyfirstcho

30、icewastobeinthatfield,moreover,thedepartmentofeducationitselfwasadubiousventure.presidentreaganwasseekingtoabolishtheentiredepartment.formyfirstmonthsattheeeoc,whereicontinuedtobeanassistanttojudgethomas,therewerenosexualconversationsorovertures,however,duringthefallandwinterof1982,thesebeganagain,t

31、hecommentswererandomandrangedfrompressingmeaboutwhyididntgooutwithhimtoremarksaboutmypersonalappearance,irememberhissayingthatsomedayiwouldhavetotellhimtherealreasonthatiwouldntgooutwithhim.hebegantoshowdispleasureinhistoneandvoiceandhisdemeanorandhiscontinuedpressureforanexplanation,hecommentedonwh

32、atiwaswearingintermsofwhetheritmadememoreorlesssexuallyattractive,theincidentsoccurredinhisinnerofficeattheeeoc.oneoftheoddestepisodesirememberwasanoccasioninwhichthomaswasdrinkingacokeinhisoffice,hegotupfromthetableatwhichwewereworking,wentovertohisdesktogetthecoke,lookedatthecanandasked,"whoh

34、eornotgivingmeimportantassignments,ialsothoughtthathemightfindanexcusefordismissingme.inJanuaryof1983,ibeganlookingforanotherjob.iwashandicappedbecauseifearedthat,ifhefoundout,hemightmakeitdifficultformetofindotheremploymentandimightbedismissedfromthejobihad.anotherfactorthatmademysearchmoredifficul

35、twasthattherewasaperiod-thiswasduringaperiodofahiringfreezeinthegovernment.infebruaryof1983,iwashospitalizedforfivedaysonanemergencybasisforacutestomachpainwhichiattributedtostressonthejob.onceoutofthehospital,ibecamemorecommittedtofindotheremploymentandsoughtfurthertominimizemycontactwiththomas.thi
