People often express the thoughts with body language for more sooth communication.This paper deals with exploring the similarities and differences of body language from
3、 different cultures, especially through comparing of Chinese body language and American body language, from which we can know the cultural differences better and avoid misunderstanding and embarrassment in cross-culture communication.The Purpose of Research The fast development of science, technolog
4、y and economy brings about more international contact and exchanges. The communication between people from different cultures and countries is also increasing, not only of language communication but also of nonverbal communication. Different people have their own ways to communicate according to cul
5、tural backgrounds, the living style, and religions.When in cross-culture communication, understanding the body language can help us obtain more correct information.Body language is a broad term for communication using body movements, gestures, facial expressions and eye contacts in comparison with s
6、ounds, verbal language, and other forms of communication. Functions Body language has three major functions: assisting, substituting and expressing or hiding emotional feelings. Our expression, eyes, tone of voice, facial expression and other body movements often convey our real meaning, no matter w
7、hat words the person says. CharacteristicsBody language assists verbal language to strengthen the communicative effect of language.Body language is a way to reflect peoples changes of their inner feelings and emotions. In different culture backgrounds, body language is often endowed with different m

11、ple do not like to be close to each other during the communication, and they prefer to keep a certain distance.On the contrary, the Arabians and Spanish would like to stand close to the person whom they are talking to.Facial expression is the most common and also most direct way to express peoples e

Handshake is used for greetings, farewells.In most estern countries, it is common for two persons to hug and kiss when they meet each othe
14、r. In Asia, handshake is the main way to greet each other. 15、g connection with the culture. That is why people in different countries communicate in different ways from each other. The body language and culture have a very delicate and subtle relationship. The cultural characteristics of people are reflected by the body language they convey.Different countrie
16、s have different histories, cultures and customs, which are all reflected by the body language. Japanese greet by bowing, Arabs by kissing on both cheeks and Chinese people by shaking hands to show “their greeting”. If you want to guide a person to come by, in Thailand,you should move the fingers ba
17、ck and forth with palm facing down.But in the United States, you can hold the palm up and move the fingers towards the body saying come here.Nodding ones head is generally used to show agreement “yes”, but to Nepalese, and people in some Indian countries, it means “no”.For Arabs, when they are havin
18、g a talk, it is a good manner to stand close to his friend. No matter what people do, they always follow the conventional protocols and etiquettes. 2.In a Chinese family, people have clear distinctions between each other.The members are called di

So the younger use the way of giving the old a seat
22、 to show respect. But in America, people tend to shorter the distance to show the equality. When the people who have high stature want to create a harmonious and equal balanced atmosphere by shortening the distance when they are conversing with you, they will choose to sit. Americans often touch the
23、ir temples to show cleverness. But in Chinese culture, this action means there is something wrong with ones mind. Americans lay their hands on their necks to show that they are full, while Chinese just pat their stomachs to express fullness. It is a shock to Chinese when they see the Americans doing
24、 the gesture because it often means committing suicide in Chinese culture. In China, people greet with each other with head nodding, smile, hand shaking and so on. It is the same with shaking hands in Northern America when they greet with others. In America, normal friends and acquaintances would li
25、ke to avoid body touch.So is in China. When in a conversation, Americans prefer to have eye contact with talkers than Chinese. Americans pay great attentions to the time and the way the eye contact was given and in which situation.They believe the saying “Never trust a person who cant look at you in the eyes.” For showing politeness or respect, Chinese people will often frequently avoid direct
