26、 it so good? Or do they face morechallenges than any previous generation? Our current era in theWest is one of high wealth. This means minors enjoy materialbenefits and legal protections that would have been the envy ofthose living in the past. But there is an increasing suspicionthat all is not wel

27、l for our youth. And one of the most popularexplanations, among some experts and the popular media, is thatexcessive “screen time” is to blame (This refers to all theattention young people devote to their phones, tablets andlaptops). However, this is a connection theory and such claimshave been trea

28、ted skeptically by some scholars based on theirreading of the relevant data.B Now a study in the journal Emotion has provided anothercontribution to the debate, uncovering strong evidence thatadolescentwellbeingintheUnitedStatesreallyisexperiencingadeclineandarguingthatthemostlikelycauseistheelectro

29、nicriches we have given them. The background to this is that fromthe1960sintotheearly2000s,measuresofaveragewellbeingwentup in the US.This was especially true for younger people. Itreflected the fact that these decades saw a climb in generalstandards of living and avoidance of mass societal traumas

30、likefull-scalewar or economic deprivation. However, the “screentime” hypothesis, advanced by researchers such as Jean Twenge,is that electronic devices and excessive time spent online mayhave reversed these trends in recent years, causing problems foryoung peoples psychological health.C To investiga

31、te, Twenge and her colleagues dived into the“Monitoring The Future” dataset based on annual surveys ofAmerican school students from grades 8, 10, and 12 that startedin 1991. In total, 1.1 million young people answered variousquestionsrelatedtotheirwellbeing.Twengesteamsanalysisoftheanswersconfirmedt

32、heearlier,well-establishedwellbeingclimb, with scores rising across the 1990s, and into the later2000s. This was found across measures like self-esteem, lifesatisfaction,happinessandsatisfactionwithindividualdomainslikejob,neighborhood,orfriends.Butaround2012thesemeasuresstarted to decline. This con

33、tinued through 2016, the most recentyear for which data is available.DTwengeandhercolleagueswantedtounderstandwhythischangein average wellbeing has occurred. However, its very hard todemonstratecausesinnon-experimentaldatasuchasthis.Infact,when Twenge previously used this data to suggest a screen ti

34、meeffect, some commentators were quick to raise this problem.Theyargued that her causal-sounding claims rested on correlationaldata, and that she had not adequately accounted for otherpotential causal factors. This time around, Twenge and her teammakeapointofsayingthatthattheyarenottryingtoestablish

35、causes as such, but that they are assessing the plausibility ofpotential causes.E First, they explain that if a given variable is playing acausal role in affecting wellbeing, then we should expect anychange in that variable to correlate with the observed changesin wellbeing. If not, it isnt plausibl

36、e that the variable isa causal factor. So the researchers looked at time spent in anumberofactivitiesthatcouldplausiblybedrivingthewellbeingdecline.Lesssport,andfewermeetingswithpeerscorrelatedwithlowerwellbeing,asdidlesstimereadingprintmedia(newspapers)and, surprisingly, less time doing homework (T

37、his last findingwould appear to contradict another popular hypothesis that it isour burdening of students with assignments that is causing allthe problems). In addition, more TV watching and more electroniccommunication both correlated with lower wellbeing. All theseeffects held true for measures of

38、 happiness, life satisfactionand self-esteem, with the effects stronger in the 8th and10th-graders.F Next, Twenges team dug a little deeper into the data onscreentime. They found that adolescents who spent a very smallamount of time on digital devicesa couple of hourshad thehighestwellbeing.Theirwel

39、lbeingwasevenhigherthanthosewhoneverusedsuchdevices.However,higherdosesofscreentimewereclearly associated with lower happiness. Those spending 10-19hours per week on their devices were 41 percent more likely tobeunhappythanlower-frequencyusers.Thosewhousedsuchdevices40 hours a week or more (one in t

40、en of teenagers) were twice aslikely to be unhappy. The data was slightly complicated by thefact that there was a tendency for kids who were social in thereal world to also use more online communication, but bybracketingoutdifferentcasesitbecameclearthatthereal-worldsociality component correlated wi

41、th greater wellbeing, whereasgreater time on screens or online only correlated with poorerwellbeing.GSofar,soplausible.Butthenextquestionis,arethedropsin average wellbeing happening at the same timeas trends towardincreased electronic device usage? It looks like itafter all,2012wasthetippingpointwhe

42、nmorethanhalfofAmericansbeganowning smartphones. Twenge and her colleagues also found thatacross the key years of 2013-16, wellbeing was indeed lowest inyears where adolescents spent more time online, on social media,and reading news online, and when more youth in the US hadsmartphones. And in a sec

43、ond analysis, they found that wheretechnology went, dips in wellbeing followed.For instance, yearswithalargerincreaseinonlineusagewerefollowedbyyearswithlower wellbeing, rather than the other way around. This does notprove causality, but is consistent with it. Meanwhile, TV usedidntshowthistracking.

44、TVmightmakeyoulesshappy,butthisisnot what seems to be driving the recent declines in youngpeoples average happiness.H A similar but reversed pattern was found for theactivitiesassociated with greater wellbeing. For example, yearswhere people spent more time with friends were better years forwellbein

45、g (and followed by better years). Sadly, the data alsoshowedface-to-facesocializingandsportsactivityhaddeclinedover the period covered by the survey.I There is another explanation that Twenge and her colleagueswantedtoaddress:theimpactofthegreatrecessionof2007-2009,which hit a great number of Americ

46、an families and might beaffectingadolescents.Thedatasetdidntincludeeconomicdata,soinsteadtheresearcherslookedatwhetherthe2013-16wellbeingdecline was tracking economic indicators. They found someevidence that some crude measures, like income inequality,correlatedwithchangesinwellbeing,buteconomicmeas

47、ureswitha more direct impact, like family income and unemployment rates(whichputfamiliesintodifficulties),hadnorelationshipwithwellbeing. The researchers also note that the recession hit someyearsbeforeweseethebeginningofthewellbeingdrop,andbeforethe steepest wellbeing decline, which occurred in 201

48、3.J The researchers conclude that electronic communication wasthe only adolescent activity that increased at the same timepsychologicalwellbeingdeclined.Isuspectthatsomeexpertsinthe field will be keen to address alternative explanations, suchas unassessed variables playing a role in the wellbeing de

49、cline.But the new work does go further than before and suggests thatscreen time should still be considered a potential barrier toyoung peoples flourishing.36.
