Laoshengismeaningbeardedmen,becausetheactorswearartificialbeards,andtheyaremiddle-agedorelderlymen.Mostareupright(正直)andresolute(剛毅)characters.Theysingintheirnaturalvoices,andtheiractionsareseriousones.Xiaoshengrepresentsyoungmalecharacters.Theydon'twearartificialbeards.Theyalwayssingintheirrealvoices,whileinKunquandPihuangoperasthesingingmixesnaturalandfalsettovoices.
