山東農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)課程論文論文題目:ResearchProposal任課教師:任艷班級:2010級1班姓名:王立強學(xué)號:20093498日期:2012.11.5TheDisillusionofAmericanDreaminTheGreatGatsbyThesisTitle:TheDisillusionofAmericanDreaminTheGreatGatsbyThesisstatement(Introduction:TheGreatGatsby,writtenin1925,isoneofthegreatestliterarydocumentsofthisperiodaswellasamasterpiecerelatedwithironyandpathostothe“AmericanDream.”Itisapictureoftheunprecedentedprosperityandmaterialexcess.Manycriticshavemadealotofstudiesonitandwrotenumerouscriticalessays.TheEnglishfamouspoetandcriticT.S.Eliotwhohasneverhadahastyandextravagantcritic,readTheGreatGatsbythreetimesandpraisedthenovelwas“thefirststepthatAmericanfictionhastakensinceHenryJames.”(Donaldson,1984:268H.L.Mencken,amostinfluentialcriticofthattime,declaredthisnoveltobe“nomorethanaglorifiedanecdote.”In1983,TheGreatGatsbywastranslatedintoChinesebyProfessorWuKunning,afterthatmanyChinesescholarsbeganstudyonTheGreatGatsby,analyzingitsartisticforms,itsthemeanditssymbols.ToZhangLilong,“TheGreatGatsbyisactuallyarecallandsummaryoftheprocessofevolvementoftheAmericandreamhistoricalandrealisticperspectives.”(ZhangLilong,1998:108-109OthersanalysesGatsby’stragedy.WangYujuanarguesthat“thedreamofGatsbyisalsothedreamofallAmericans.ThedefeatofGatsbyisalsothelossofthegeneration.”(WangYujuan,1998:28Fromallresearchesbothdomesticandabroad,wecanseethatTheGreatGatsbyisagreatnovelthateveryonecanhavedifferentinterpretationfromdifferentaspects.However,afewresearcheshavestudiedaboutwhatruinedGatsby’sdreamandwhyhisdreaminevitablyfailed.Therefore,thispaperwillrevealtherootsandcausesofthefailureofGatsby’sdream.1.Thesignificanceofyourresearch:Scott.FitzgeraldisaprominentnovelistintheAmericanliterature,ownedthetitleofthespokesmanoftheJazzAgeandthelaurelofpoet.Heisalsooneofthemostrepresentativewritersinthe“LostGeneration”TheGreatGatsbystandsforhismasterpiece.TheGreatGatsbyhasassumedameaningmorethanaMereromanticlovestory.Actually,Gatsby’spursuitofhisdreamandhisfinaltragedyexemplifytoagreatextenttheendoftheillusoryAmericandream.Thenovelshowsavividpictureofthe1920swhenAmericaenteredtheshortbutunprecedentedlyprosperousperiod,andwhenmanypeoplethoughtAmericawasthelandoffreedomanddreamedan“Americandreamwhichwasactuallyabeautifulmirage.However,intheprocessofpursuingtheirdreampeopleabandonedalotofsocialvaluestheytreasuredinthepastandregardedmoneyastheonlytoolofjudginghumansuccess.Thisisalsothepointthatthisthesisintendstoexpress.Symbolismwasalatenineteenth-centuryartmovementofFrenchandBelgianorigininpoetryandotherarts.Themediscussioninthepaperisdonethroughanalyzingthesymbolismusedinthenovel,whichaimsforbetterunderstandingoftheconnotationofthenovel.AlsothispapertriestoanalyzethecharacteristicofGatsby.Hisignorancemakeshisfailureatfirst.Allofthiscaninspireusalot.2.Methodology:Throughconsultingalargenumberofmaterial,understand"lostgeneration"ofthesocialbackgroundandtheauthor'slifeexperience,carefullyreadthetwoworks,deeplyanalyzedthetwothecharacteroftheheroisthesimilaritiesanddifferences,tofindtherealreasonfortheAmericandreamlost.3.PossibledifficultiesandsolutionsMyviewpointpresentedinthisdissertationwouldbesuperficialandincomplete,formyownliteraryculturationandknowledgeaboutthisbookarelimited.Ihavetriedmybesttosolvetheseproblemsvialookingupinthelibrary,surfingtheinternetandaskinghelpfrommytutor.4.Potentialconclusions:FitzgeraldexpressedhissadnesstotheLostGenerationbydescribingaseriesoftragediessuccessfullyinTheGreatGatsbywhichreflectsthesocialrealityofthatage.Thehero,Gatsby,isanindividuallivinginthatperiod,wholivesapoorlifeinyouth.InGatsby’seyes,theworldismaterialwithoutrealandlove.Thedistortedpursuitofmaterialandsocialsuccessisdoomedtofailure.Gatsbytriestochangetheworldofmaterialintotheidealworldoftheirfantasy.Withhisgreatefforts,hegainswealth,provinghissuccess.But,thedreamtheyarechasingisvast,naive,andimpractical.Itisafairytalewhichnevercomestrueinthegreedysociety.Facingtherelentlessreality,bothGatsbyandhisdreamarejustburiedinthisheartlessland.HispersonalexperienceistherealizationoftheAmericandream.TheGreatGatsbyshowsalloftheAmericanexperienceinthe1920s,criticizesthesocietythatmoneyranksfirstandpeopleonlycarethemselves.ThroughaninterpretiveanalysisofthesocialbackgroundoftheAmerican1920sandcharactersoftheheroes,wehaveconcludedthattherearethreerootsofGatsby’sfailure.First,becauseGatsby’sdream,astheAmericandream,containsomelimitationsandcontradictoryaspects,itcannotsurviveintherigidreality.Secondly,wecanseeGatsby’sself-destructivepotentials——innocenceandnaivetyfromhisidealismorromanticism.Finally,comparedwithGatsby,therearetoomuchselfishandimmoralpeopleandbehaviorsinthisunequalsociety.Gatsby’sinnocenceandnaivetyisdoomedtofailureinthecorruptedAmericansociety.Therefore,Gatsby’stragedyisinevitableinthatage,andGatsby’stragedyalsoindicatesthedisillusionmentoftheAmericandream.OneofthereasonswhyitisstillpopularnowalthoughithasbeenovereightyyearssinceitwasfirstpublishedisthespiritofGatsbywhichinspirestheyounggenerationtopursuetheirdreams.Inordertomakehisdreamcometrue,Gatsbyissobrave,toughandpersistent.Nomatterwhatdifficultieshefaces,henevergivesuptochasehisdream.Dreamisoneofthemostimportantthingsinourlife,whichguidesthewayoflife.Whenwemeetsomebarriersonourstudyorwork,Gatsby’spassionstimulatesustosurpassourselves.Itpushesustomakethedreamcometrue.Ontheotherhand,Gatsby’stragedyalsogivesussomerevelations.Dreamshouldbeestablishedonreality.Onceourdreamisfarfromtheactuality,itcannotcometrueyet.Therefore,beforedrawingablueprintforourfuture,wemustclearwhatwewanttodoandwhatwecando.5.Previouspreparations:ThetitleofmyreportistheDisillusionoftheAmericanDreaminF.ScottFitzgerald'sTheGreatGatsby.FrancisScottFitzgeraldiswidelyregardedasoneofthegreatestAmericanwritersinthetwentiethcenturyandheisalsotherepresentativeof"theJazzAge".DefinedbyFitzgerald,”JazzAge"referstotheyearsfrom1919to1929.Thiswasaperiodduringwhicheconomywasboomingandthevaluesofpeoplewerechanginggreatly.Withtheeconomicprosperity,moraldecayhasbecomemoreandmoreseriouslydaybyday.ThedisillusionoftheAmericandreamisanoftenwrittenthemeintheAmericanliterature.Apersonwhoworkshardcanbecomesuccessful;thisiswhattheAmericanDreamiscenteredaround.However,theAmericanDreamchangedaspeoplebecamelustformoney,highsocialposition.Thedreamisnowcompletelylostandcanneverberestored.TheGreatGatsbywrittenbyFitzgeraldisoneoftherepresentativeworksthatreflectsthistheme.Itseemsthatitisjustalovetragedyhappeninginthatsocialbackground.Actuallyoncetakingafurtherunderstandingonthecontentofthenovel,wecanrealizethatvariousaspectsofthesocietyinthoseyearshavebeendescribedinthenovel.Inmypaper,IhopegivepeopleathoroughunderstandingaboutthedisillusionoftheAmericandreamthroughtheGreatGatsbyandaimtousethereflectiontowarnpeopletodayandtoguidepeopleinwalkingonarightwayonourtoday'ssociety.Ithinkweshouldrealizethattheblindworshiptoloveisdangerousandharmful.Inliterarywork,itmakesGatsbylosehislife;inreallife,itmakesmanypeoplelosetheirbeliefs,moralitiesandspirit.So,howtowritethispaper?Firstly,IwillmakesabriefintroductiontoFitzgerald’sliteraryworks,therationaleofthisstudy,thesummaryofthestoryandtheliteraturereviewonthisnovel.ThenIwillintroducethebackground,theorigin,theevolution,thedisillusionofAmericandreamandtherelationshipbetweentheAmericancultureandtheAmericanDream.AfterthatIwillexposethedisillusionoftheAmericandreamreflectedinTheGreatGatsbyandanalysissomecharactersinthenovel,suchasGatsby,Tom,DaisywhoareowningtheAmericanDreamandmakegreateffortstoachievetheirdreams.ThenIwillanalysissomesymbolsinthenovelwhicharerelatedtotheAmericanDreamsuchastime,ValleyofAshes,Dr.Eckleburg’seyes,Gatsby’sparties,automobileandsomecolors.ThenIwilltalkabouttherelationshipbetweenthemoneyandloveinTheGreatGatsby.GatsbybelieveshecanwinDaisybackbythepossessionheowns.Butheobtainsnothingfromhismoneyandhisdreamistotallylost.AtlastIwillexposeoftheessenceoftheAmericanDreamwasnothingbutanideamaterialisticwealthandobjectivepleasureandanalysistherealisticsignificanceintoday'ssociety.Firstly,IwillmakesabriefintroductiontoFitzgerald’sliteraryworks,therationaleofthisstudy,thesummaryofthestoryandtheliteraturereviewonthisnovel.ThenIwillintroducethebackground,theorigin,theevolution,thedisillusionofAmericandreamandtherelationshipbetweentheAmericancultureandtheAmericanDream.AfterthatIwillexposethedisillusionoftheAmericandreamreflectedinTheGreatGatsbyandanalysissomecharactersinthenovel,suchasGatsby,Tom,
