YangzhouLianyungang上有天堂，下有蘇杭Upabovethereisheaven;downbelowthereareSuzhouandHangzhouSuzhou蘇州Suzhou(Chinese:蘇州;SuzhouWu),isamajorcitylocatedinsoutheasternJiangsuProvinceofEastChina,about100kmnorthwestofShanghai.Itisamajoreconomiccentreandfocalpointoftradeandcommerce,andthesecondlargestcityintheprovinceafteritscapitalNanjing.ThecityissituatedonthelowerreachesoftheYangtzeRiverandtheshoresofLakeTaiandbelongstotheYangtzeRiverDeltaregion.Administratively,Suzhouisaprefecture-levelcitywithapopulationof4.33millioninitscityproper,andatotalresidentpopulation(asof2013)of10.58millioninitsadministrativearea.Itsurbanpopulationgrewatanunprecedentedrateof6.5%between2000and2014,whichisthehighestamongcitieswithmorethan5millionpeople.IntroductionSuzhouwasfoundedin514BC,withanabundantdisplayofrelicsandsitesofhistoricalinterest.Ataround100AD,duringtheEasternHanDynasty,itbecameoneofthetenlargestcitiesintheworldmostlyduetoemigrationfromNorthernChina.Sincethe10th-centurySongDynasty,ithasbeenanimportantcommercialcenterofChina.DuringtheMingandQingDynasty,Suzhouwasanationaleconomic,culturalandcommercialcenter,aswellasthelargestnon-capitalcityintheworld,untilthe1860TaipingRebellion.

HistoryWhenLiHongzhangandCharlesGeorgeGordonrecapturedthecitythreeyearslater,Shanghaihadalreadytakenitspredominantplaceinthenation.Sincemajoreconomicreformsbeganin1978,Suzhouhasbecomeoneofthefastestgrowingmajorcitiesintheworld,withGDPgrowthratesofabout14%inthepast35years.Withhighlifeexpectancyandpercapitaincomes,Suzhou'sHumanDevelopmentIndexratingsisroughlycomparabletoamoderatelydevelopedcountry,makingitoneofthemosthighlydevelopedandprosperouscitiesinChina.TheHumbleAdministrator'sGarden拙政園
