canbestatedquitesimplybyasking,“Isthereameaningtomusic?”Myanswertothatwouldbe,“Yes.”And“Canyoustateinsomanywordswhat(yī)themeaningis?”Myanswertothatwouldbe,“No.”Thereinliesthedifficulty.Simple-mindedsoulswillneverbesat(yī)isfiedwiththeanswertothesecondofthesequestions.Theyalwayswantmusictohaveameaning,andthemoreconcreteitisthebettertheylikeit.Themorethemusicremindsthemofat(yī)rain,astorm,afuneral,oranyotherfamiliarconceptionthemoreexpressiveitappearstobetothem.Thispopularideaofmusic’smeaning,stimulatedandabettedbytheusualrunofmusicalcommentator,shouldbediscouragedwhereverandwheneveritismet.Musicexpresses,atdifferentmoments,serenityorexuberance,regretortriumph,furyordelight.Itexpresseseachofthesemoods,andmanyothers,inanumberlessvarietyofsubtleshadingsanddifferences.Itmayevenexpressastateofmeaningforwhichthereexistsnoadequatewordinanylanguage.Inthatcase,musiciansoftenliketosaythat(yī)ithasonlyapurelymusicalmeaning.Whilelistening,eachlistenerfeelsforhimselfthespecificexpressivequalityofathemeor,similarly,anentirepieceofmusic.Andifitisagreatworkofart,don’texpectittomeanexactlythesamethingtoyoueachtimeyoureturntoit.Themesorpiecesneednotexpressonlyoneemotion,ofcourse.TakesuchathemeasthefirstmainoneoftheNinthSymphony,forexample.Itisclearlymadeupofdifferentelements.Itdoesnotsayonlyonething.Now,perhaps,thereaderwillknowbetterwhatImeanwhenIsaythatmusicdoeshaveanexpressivemeaningbutthatwecannotsayinsomanywordswhatthat(yī)meaningis.Thethirdplaneonwhichmusicexistsisthesheerlymusicalplane.Besidesthepleasurablesoundofmusicandtheexpressivefeelingthatitgivesoff,musicdoesexistintermsofthenotesthemselvesandoftheirmanipulation.Mostlistenersarenotsufficientlyconsciousofthisthirdplane.Itisveryimportantforallofustobecomemorealivetomusiconitssheerlymusicalplane.Afterall,anactualmusicalmat(yī)erialisbeingused.Theintelligentlistenermustbepreparedtoincreasehisawarenessofthemusicalmaterialandwhat(yī)happenstoit.Hemusthearthemelodies,therhythms,theharmonies,thetonecolorsinamoreconsciousfashion.Butaboveallhemust,inordertofollowthelineofthecomposer’sthought,knowsomethingoftheprinciplesofmusicalform.Listeningtoalloftheseelementsislisteningonthesheerlymusicalplane.Ihavesplitupmechanicallythethreehypothetical,separateplanesonwhichwelistenmerelyforthesakeofgreaterclarity.Actually,weneverlistenononeortheotherofthethreeplanes.Whatwedoistocorrelat(yī)ethem---listeninginallthreewaysatthesametime.Ittakesnomentaleffort,forwedoitinstinctively.Inasense,theideallistenerisbothinsideandoutsidethemusicatthesamemoment,judgingitandenjoyingit,wishingitwouldgoonewayandwatchingitgoanother---almostlikethecomposeratthemomenthecomposesit;becauseinordertowritehismusic,thecomposermustalsobeinsideandoutsidehismusic,carriedawaybyitandyetcoldlycriticalofit.Asubjectiveattitudeisimpliedinbothcreat(yī)ingandlisteningtomusic.Whatthelistenershouldstrivefor,thenisamoreactivekindoflistening.WhetheryoulistentoMozartorDukeEllington,youcandeepenyourunderstandingofmusiconlybybeingamoreconsciousandawarelistener--notso
