Abstract:

ThestudyofEnglishtranslationsof"TheDreamofRedMansions"hasalwaysbeenanimportanttopicinthefieldofChinese-Englishtranslation.Amongthem,thetranslationbyDavidHawkesandJohnMinford,asthemostinfluentialone,hasbeenwidelycirculatedandhighlyregarded.However,thetranslationbyYangXianyiandGladysYanghasnotbeengiventheattentionitdeserves.

ThispaperchoosesthetranslationbyYangXianyiandGladysYangastheresearchobject,andanalyzestheirtranslationfromfourperspectives:lexicallevel,discourselevel,culturalcontextandreaderreception.Throughthiscomprehensiveanalysis,itisfoundthatthetranslationbyYangXianyiandGladysYanghasitsuniqueadvantagesandlimitations,anditsvaluecannotbeignored.

Introduction:

"TheDreamofRedMansions"isaChineseclassicthathasbeenpasseddownforhundredsofyears.Withthedevelopmentofglobalization,theChinese-Englishtranslationof"TheDreamofRedMansions"hasgraduallybecomeanimportantresearchtopicinthefieldofliteratureandtranslation.AmongthevariousEnglishtranslations,DavidHawkesandJohnMinford'sversionoccupiesadominantpositioninacademicresearch.However,thetranslationbyYangXianyiandGladysYang,whoarealsofamoustranslators,hasbeensomewhatoverlooked.

ThisstudyaimstoprovideacomprehensiveanalysisofthetranslationbyYangXianyiandGladysYang.Basedonthetheoryoftranslationstudies,thispapermainlyanalyzestheirtranslationfromfourperspectives:lexicallevel,discourselevel,culturalcontextandreaderreception.Throughthisstudy,itisexpectedtofurtherexplorethevalueoftheirtranslationandprovideareferenceforthefuturetranslationof"TheDreamofRedMansions".

1.LexicalLevel:

Intermsoflexicallevel,YangXianyiandGladysYanghaveadoptedamorerigorousandprecisetranslationmethod.Theypaymoreattentiontothemeaningofwordsandtrytoconveytheoriginalmeaningasaccuratelyaspossible.Forexample,intheopeningchapterofthenovel,thesentence"myolderbrotherisdead"istranslatedas"myelderbrotherhaspassedaway".ThisusagereflectsthepoliteandformallanguagehabitsofancientChina,whichismoreinlinewithmodernreadinghabits.

However,therearestillsomelimitationsintheirlexicaltranslation.DuetothecomplexityofChinesecharacters,theyinevitablyencountersomeexpressionsthataredifficulttotranslate.Therefore,theyhavetousesomeequivalentexpressions,leadingtosomelossoftheoriginalmeaning.Forexample,theChineseword"jinqian"istranslatedas"HundredThousandCash"inthenovel,butthisexpressionfailstoreflecttheoriginalmeaningof"goldingotsandsilveringots".

2.DiscourseLevel:

Intermsofdiscourselevel,YangXianyiandGladysYang'stranslationstyleisrelativelysmoothandnatural.Theyusealotofsemicolonsandcommastoconnectdifferentclauses,whichcanmakethesentencesmorefluentandeasiertounderstandforEnglishreaders.TheyalsotrytoretaintheoriginalrhythmandstyleoftheChineselanguageasmuchaspossible,makingthenovelmorereadable.

However,therearealsosomelimitationsintheirdiscoursetranslation.Occasionally,somesubtleconnotationsorculturalimplicationsinChineseidiomsorexpressionsarelostintheirtranslation.Forexample,theidiom"chongyangdaojie"(theDoubleNinthFestival)istranslatedas"theninthdayoftheninthmoon".Thisexpressionfailstoconveytheculturalsignificanceofthisimportanttraditionalfestival,resultingintheweakeningoftheChineseculturalelements.

3.CulturalContext:

Readerreceptionisalsoanimportantissueinliterarytranslation,anditiscloselyrelatedtothetargetreadership.YangXianyiandGladysYang'stranslationisgenerallywellreceivedbyEnglishreaders.Theirtranslationstyleisrelativelysmoothandnatural,whichiseasytounderstand,andtheyretaintheoriginalstyleoftheChineselanguageasmuchaspossible,maintainingthecharmoftheoriginalwork.

However,therearestillsomelimitationsintermsofreaderreception.Forexample,theuseofsomearchaicEnglishexpressionsmaymakeitdifficultformodernEnglishreaderstoappreciatethebeautyofthenovel.TherearealsosomeculturalreferencesthatmaybedifficultforEnglishreaderstounderstand.

Conclusion:

ThroughacomprehensiveanalysisofthetranslationofYangXianyiandGladysYang,itcanbefoundthattheirtranslationof"TheDreamofRedMansions"hasitsuniqueadvantagesandlimitations.Althoughtherearestillsomeshortcomingsintermsoflexicallevel,discourselevel,culturalcontextandreaderreception,theirtranslationhasmadeasignificantcontributiontotheEnglishversionof"TheDreamofRedMansions".Therefore,theirtranslationdeservesmoreattentionfromscholarsandreaders.Onthelexicallevel,thetranslationofYangXianyiandGladysYangiscommendable.TheywereabletoaccuratelyrenderthemeaningandmessageoftheoriginalChinesetextintoEnglish.Therichnessandcomplexityoftheoriginaltextwerenotlostintheirtranslation,andtheywereabletocapturethenuancesandsubtletiesofthelanguageusedinthenovel.However,therearestillsomeinstanceswheretheirtranslationfallsshort,astherearecertainwordsandexpressionsthataredifficulttotranslatedirectlyintoEnglish.Insomecases,theyhadtorelyonfootnotesandexplanationstoconveythemeaningofcertainwordsandexpressions.

Onthediscourselevel,thetranslationofYangXianyiandGladysYangisalsonoteworthy.Theywereabletomaintaintheflowandcontinuityofthestory,eventhoughtheoriginalChinesetextwaswritteninadifferentnarrativestyle.TheywereabletoadaptthetexttosuitthepreferencesofEnglish-speakingreaderswithoutcompromisingtheintegrityofthestory.However,therearestillsomeinstanceswheretheirtranslationcouldhavebeenimproved,astherearepartswherethetextbecomesconvolutedanddifficulttofollow,andthetransitionsbetweenscenesarenotalwayssmooth.
