ShewasbornRosaLouiseMcCauleyinnineteen-thirteeninTuskegee,Alabama.Sheattendedlocalschoolsuntilshewaselevenyearsold.ThenshewassenttoschoolinMontgomery.Shelefthighschoolearlytocareforhersickgrandmother,thentocareforhermother.Shedidnotfinishhighschooluntilshewastwenty-one.RosamarriedRaymondParksinnineteenthirty-two.Hewasabarberwhocutmen'shair.Hewasalsoacivilrightsactivist.Together,theyworkedforthelocalgroupoftheNationalAssociationfortheAdvancementofColoredPeople.Innineteenforty-three,MissusParksbecameanofficerinthegroupandlateritsyouthleader.

Forthisstudy,theyandChristopherDawesofUCSDusednationaldatathatcomparedmorethan1,000identicalandfraternaltwins.Becausetwinsshareanenvironment,thesestudiesaregoodforshowingtheimpactthatgeneshaveonvariousthings,becauseidenticaltwinssharealltheirgeneswhilefraternaltwinssharejusthalf.
