todragonwhileotherssitinsilence?...IdonotbelievethatthisiswhattheCreator...designedhumanstodo.”Thestrange,almost prehensiblefactisthatmanyprofessors,justastheyfeelobligedtowritedully,believethattheyshouldlecturedully.Toshowenthusiasmistoriskappearingunscientific,unobjective;itistoappealtothestudents’emotionsratherthantheirinlect.Thustheideallectureisonefilledwithfactsandreadinanunchangedmonotone.Thecult(推崇)oflecturingdully,likethecultofwritingdully,goesback,ofcourse,years.EdwardShils,professorofsociology,recallstheprofessorsheencounteredattheUniversityofPennsylvaniainhisyouth.Theyseemed“apriesthood,ratherunevenintheirmeritsbutuniformintheirbearing;theyneverreferredtoanything al.Somereadfromoldlecturenotesandthenhaltinglyexinedthethumb-wornlastlines.Otherslecturedfromcardsthathadservedforyears,tojudgebythewornedgesTheteachersbeganontime,endedontime,andlefttheroomsayingawordmoretotheirstudents,veryseldombeingdetainedbyquestionersTheclasseswerenotlarge,yettherewasnodiscussion.Noquestionswereraisedinclass,andtherewerenoofficehours.”Theauthorbelievesthatasuccessfulteachershouldbeableto makedramatizationanimportantaspectofstudents’makeinspiredyanintegralpartofthelearningimprovestudents’learningmakestudyjustaseasyasThemajorityofuniversityprofessorspreferthetraditionalwayoflecturinginthebelief itdrawsthecloseattentionoftheitconformsinawaytothedesignoftheitpresentscoursecontentinascientificandobjectiveithelpsstudentsto theoriesmoreWhatthe mendsinthispassageisthat professorsareagroupofprofessionalsthatdifferintheiracademicabilitybutbehaveinthesamewayprofessorsarelikepriestswearingthesamekindofblackgownbuthavingdifferentrolestoythereisnofundamentaldifferencebetweenprofessorsandprieststhoughtheydifferintheirprofessorsattheUniversityofPennsylvaniausedtowearblacksuitswhichmadethemlooklikepriestsWhoseteachingmethodisparticularlycommendedbytheEzekielAlfredNorthCottonPatriciaNelsonPassageQuestions31to35arebasedonthefollowingTakethecaseofpubliceducationalone.Theprincipaldifficultyfacedbytheschoolshasbeenthetremendousincreaseinthenumberofpupils.Thishasbeencausedbytheadvanceoftheageforgoingintoindustryandtheimpossibilityoffindingajobevenwhenthelegalagehasbeenreached.Inviewofthetechnologicalimprovementsinthelastfewyears,businesswillrequireinthefutureproportionayfewerworkersthaneverbefore.Theresultwillbestillfurtherraisingofthelegalageforgoingintoemployment,andstillfurtherdifficultyinfindingemploymentwhenthatagehasbeenattained.Ifwecannotputourchildrentowork,wemustputtheminschool.Wemayalsobequiteconfidentthatthepresenttrendtowardashorterdayandashorterweekwillbemaintained.Wehavedevelopedandshallcontinuetohaveanewleisureclass.Alreadythepublicagenciesforadulteducationareswampedbythetidethathassweptoverthemsincethedepressionbegan.Theywillbelittlebetteroffwhenitisover.TheirsupportmustcomefromtheItissurelytoomuchtohopethattheseincreasesinthecostofpubliceducationcanbebornebythelocalcommunities.Theycannotcareforthepresentrestrictedandinadequatesystem.Thelocalcommunitieshavefailedintheireffortstocopewithunemployment.Theycannotexpecttocopewithpubliceducationonthescaleonwhichwemustattemptit.TheanswertotheproblemofunemploymenthasbeenFederalrelief.Theanswertotheproblemofpubliceducationmayhavetobemuchthesame,andproperlyso.Ifthereisonethinginwhichthecitizensofallpartsofthecountryhaveaninterest,itisinthedecenteducationofthecitizensofallpartsofthecountry.Ouretaxnowgoesinparttokeepourneighborsalive.ItmayhavetogoinpartaswelltomakeourneighborsinligentWearenowattemptingtopreservethepresentgenerationthroughFederalreliefofthedestitute(貧民OnlyapeopledeterminedtoruinthenextgenerationwillrefusesuchFederalfundsaspubliceducationmayrequire.WhatisthepassagemainlyHowtopersuadelocalcommunitiestoprovidemoreHowtocopewiththeshortageoffundsforpublicHowtoimprovethepubliceducationHowtosolvetherisingunemploymentWhatisthereasonfortheincreaseinthenumberofTherequirementofeducatedworkersbyRaisingofthelegalageforgoingtoThetrendtowardashorterPeople’sconcernforthefutureofthenextThepublicagenciesforadulteducationwillbelittlebetteroffbecause
