Thedieselengineisaformofinternalcombustionenginesimilartothatusedinabus.Its

powerisexpressedasbrakehorsepower(bhp).Thisisthepowerputoutbytheengine.Elective

horsepoweristhepowerdevelopedbythepistoninthecylinder,butsomeofthisislostbyfriction

withintheengine.Thepoweroutputofamodemmarinedieselengineisabout40.000brake

horsepower.Thisisnowexpressedinkilowatts.Bycomparisontheengineofasmallfamilycar

hasanoutputofabout80bhp.Largedieselengines,whichhavecylindersnearly3ftindiameter,
