Thefirstprofessionalteamwasstartedin1869.ThisteamwastheRedStockingsofCincinati.Withinafewyearstherewereprofessionalteamsinothercities.In1876,theseteamscametogetherinaleague,orgroup,calledtheNationalLeague.TheteamsintheNationalLeagueplayedoneanother.

In1901,anewleague,calledtheAmericanLeague,wasformed.Tocreatesomeexcitement,in1903,thetwoleaguesdecidedtohavetheirfirst-placeteamsplayeachother.ThiseventwascalledtheWorldSeries.
