Introduction

Secondlanguageacquisitionhasbecomeaglobalphenomenon,especiallywiththeincreasingneedforglobalcommunication.English,asthemostwidelyusedlanguageintheworld,hasattractedspecialattentioninsecondlanguageacquisitionresearch.TheabilitytoreadEnglishfluentlyisessentialforachievingagoodcommandofthelanguage.Asaresult,EnglishlanguagelearninginstitutionshaveattachedconsiderableimportancetoimprovingreadingfluencyamongstL2learners.ThispaperaimstoreviewcurrentresearchonEnglishlanguagereadingandhowitislearnedinasecondlanguageacquisitioncontext.

EnglishLanguageReading

ReadinginEnglishisoneofthemostchallengingskillsforlanguagelearnersbecauseitrequiresacombinationofskillssuchaspronunciation,vocabularyskills,grammaticalstructures,andcomprehension,whichcanbechallengingtointegrate.Thelearningoftheseskillsduringsecondlanguageacquisitioncanbetedious,whichiswhyreadingisoftenconsideredachallengingtaskforL2learners.Furthermore,exposuretoEnglishlanguagematerials,whetherintheformofwrittentextoraudiorecordings,canbelimitedandmayfailtocaterforthevaryingEnglishlanguageproficiencylevelsamongL2learners.

EnglishLanguagePronunciation

TheabilitytopronounceEnglishwordscorrectlyisamongthemostimportantfactorsaffectingL2readingskills.Pronunciationcanbeenhancedbyexposuretothesoundofthelanguage,whichcanleadtoamoreaccuraterepresentationofwordsinthereader’smind.TheabilitytoreadEnglishaloudcanimprovepronunciationandfluency,andithasbeenidentifiedasanessentialfactorinsecondlanguageacquisition.

VocabularySkills

Theacquisitionofvocabularyskillsisanothervitalfactorinsecondlanguagereading.Thesuccessofthisskillisdependentonthecapacitytounderstandandapplywords’meaningswhilereadingtexts.InL2learners,vocabularyacquisitionisoftenachievedthroughconsciouslearning,althoughincidentallearningcanalsooccur,whichistheacquisitionofwordsoutsideofthelanguageclassroomthroughexposuretothelanguage.

Comprehension

Theabilitytocomprehendwrittenmaterialistheultimategoalofreadingtasksinsecondlanguageacquisition.Itreferstothereader’sabilitytotranslatethewrittentextintomeaningfulideasapplicableinreal-lifesituations.ReadingcomprehensioninL2is,therefore,acrucialcomponentofEnglishlanguageproficiencydevelopment.

ResearchMethodology

Inthisstudy,anextensivereviewofliteratureonEnglishreadinginsecondlanguageacquisitionwasconductedthroughelectronicdatabasessuchasGoogleScholar,ERIC,andJSTOR.Articlespublishedbetween2015and2021wereanalysed,withafocusonresearchconductedinChina.

Results

TheresearchidentifiedthatdifferentapproachestoteachingEnglishreadinghavebeenemployedinChineselanguagelearninginstitutions,includingextensivereading,extensivereadingprograms,andcomputer-assistedlanguagelearning.Theuseofreadingprogrammeshasbeenobservedtobeeffectiveinimprovingreadingfluency,andhasledtoimprovementsinvocabularyacquisitionandcomprehensionofEnglishtexts.Additionally,theuseofaudio-basedcomputer-assistedlanguagelearninghasbeenshowntoimprovepronunciationandintonationaccuracyinreadingEnglishaloud.

FurtherresearchindicatesthattheabilitytoreadinEnglishcanbegreatlydevelopedbytheuseofreadingstrategiessuchaspredicting,skimming,scanning,andinferencing.Infering,forinstance,involvesdrawingconclusionsaboutthemeaningofwordsortextfromthecontextinwhichtheyareused.Thesestrategiescanimprovecomprehensionofwrittentextsinreadingtasks.

Discussion

ThecurrentstudyindicatesthatEnglishreadingfluencycanbeimprovedbyexposuretotheEnglishlanguagethroughvariousstrategies.Theuseofcomputer-assistedlanguagelearning,whichhasbeenshowntobeeffectiveinpromotingreadingfluency,remainsaninnovativeapproachbutalsoposesariskofover-dependenceontechnology.However,variouschallengesstillexistthathinderEnglishlanguagereadingacquisitioninL2learners,suchaslackofexposuretoEnglishmaterialsandEnglishproficiencylevelsamonglearners.Despitethesechallenges,itisessentialtoconsiderthatsuccessinEnglishreadingforL2learnersisachievablewithproperstructuresandstrategiesinteaching.

Conclusion

ThisstudyhasshownthatEnglishreadingfluencyinsecondlanguageacquisitionrequiresacombinationofskillssuchasvocabularyacquisition,grammaticalstructures,properpronunciation,andcomprehension.Theuseofreadingstrategiessuchaspredicting,skimming,scanning,andinferencingcanhelpimproveEnglishreadingfluency.Additionally,theuseofcomputer-assistedlanguagelearning,extensivereadingprograms,andexposuretoEnglishmaterialscanalsoimprovereadingskills.N
