Anewstudyhasfoundthatachild’sreadingspeedcanbeimprovedbysimplyincreasingthespacebetweenletterswithinapieceoftext.Theresearch,ledbyDrStevenStaggofAngliaRuskinUniversity(ARU),examinedthebenefitsofletterspacingandcolouredoverlays(顏色標(biāo)注)amongchildren.

Twogroupsofchildren,dyslexic(有閱讀障礙的)andnon-dyslexicchildren,wereaskedtoreadfourtextswitheitherstandardorextra-largeletterspacing,bothwithandwithoutacolouredoverlay.Theywereinstructedtoreadthetextoutloudwhilebeingrecorded.Therecordingwasusedtomeasurethenumberoferrorstheymade—specificallymissedwords,addedwords,wrongwords,andpronunciation—aswellastheparticipants’readingtime.

Thestudydiscoveredthattextwithincreasedspacebetweenlettersprovidedabenefitforbothgroups.Onaverage,thedyslexiagroupshoweda13%increaseinreadingspeed,whilethegroupofnon-dyslexicchildrenshoweda5%increase.Inadditiontoimprovingreadingspeed,italsoresultedinasignificantdeclineinthenumberofwordsmissedbythechildrenwithdyslexia.However,thestudyfoundthatcolouredoverlayshadnosignificantimpactonreadingspeedorthereductionoferrorsforeithergroup.

DrStagg,SeniorLecturerinPsychologyatARU,said,“Webelieveextra-largeletterspacingworksbyreducingwhatisknownasthe‘crowdingeffect’,whichcanhampertherecognitionoflettersandreducereadingspeed.”

“Ourfindingsstronglysuggestthatteacherscanbeconfidentthatallchildrenwouldbehelpedbyincreasedletterspacinginreadingmaterials.”DrStaggadded.Whilewefoundthatcolouredoverlaysprovidedlittlebenefit,wesuggestchildrenshouldbeencouragedtouseoverlaysiftheyfindthesehelptheirreading.Colouredoverlaysmaynotincreasereadingspeeds,buttheymayextendreadingstamina(持久力).Previousresearchsuggeststheirbenefitsmaynotbecomeapparentifreadingtimeislessthan10minutesandtheshortreadingdurationofthetestsinourstudymayhaveputcolouredoverlaysatadisadvantage.
