UFOsaremoreoftenthannotrevealedtobesomethingverywellknown—aweatherballoonorairplanelights,forexample.Butinanywherefrom5to10percentofUFOcases,theobjectremainsamystery.

UFOSightings

UFOsightingshavebeenassociatedwithso-calledalienabductions(誘拐),inwhichpeoplesaythattheyhavebeentransportedtoanalienspacecraftandsubjectedtovarietyofphysicalexaminations.UFOshavealsobeenlinkedtocropcircles,strangeandsometimesunexplainedpatternsthatformovernightinfields.UFOshavebeenblamedforanimalmutilations—horses,goats,cows,deerandothercreaturesfounddrainedofbloodandwiththeirorgansremoved.Thealientheoryarisesbecausetypicallynotracksarefoundaroundtheanimaltoindicatethatahumanwasresponsible.

DuringaUFOsighting,strangephenomenaareoftenreported,suchasradioandTVinterferenceorcarignitionfailure.ManyUFOsleavestrangecallingcards,suchasindentationsintheground;burnedorflattenedvegetation;andchunksofunidentifiabledebris.AreUFOsRealorScienceFiction?

AreUFOsalienspacecraftpilotedbyextraterrestrial(地球以外的)beings,oraretheyterrestrialobjectsthatjusthaven'tbeenproperlyidentified?Thequestionhasraisedagoodbitofcontroversy,pittingthosewhobelieveinUFOsagainstthosewhosay"theyneedtoseemorescientificevidence."

SurveysshowthattheoverwhelmingmajorityofAmericansbelievethatintelligentlifeexistselsewhereintheuniverse.Morethan60percentofrespondentstoa1997CNNpollsaidtheybelievealienshavecontactedhumans;approximately50percentsaidtheythinkalienshaveabductedhumans;and80percentbelievethegovernmentishidingsomethingaboutaliencontact.

PeoplewhoclaimtohaveseenUFOsareconfidentthatwhatthey'veseenisreal.TheysaythesealienbeingshavecometoEarthtostudythehumanraceorsimplytocommunicatewithhumans.ButskepticssaythereisastartlinglackofrealscientificevidencetoproveordisprovetheUFOphenomenon.TheyarguethatthemajorityofUFOsturnouttobeidentifiablephenomena—everythingfromweatherballoonstometeorshowerstohoaxes.

TheDrakeEquation

Doesintelligentlifeexistonotherplanets?In1961,Dr.FrankDrake,presidentoftheSETI(SearchforExtraterrestrialIntelligence)Institute,developedamathematicalequationtodeterminetheprobability.Hisequationisbasedonsevenvariables,includingthenumberofstarsinourgalaxyandthepercentageofstarsthathaveplanetarysystems.Whenallsevenvariablesaremultiplied,theansweristhepotentialnumberofcivilizationsouttherethatmightbeabletocommunicatewithus.

AlienEncounters

Havealiensreallytakenpeopleintotheirspacecraftandexperimentedonthem?Manysaytheyhave.ProbablythefirstaccountofanalienabductioncamefromaNewHampshirecouplenamedBarneyandBettyHill.OnSeptember19,1961,thecouplewasdrivingthrougharuralareaincentralNewHampshirewhentheynoticedamovinglightinthesky.Astheobjectcamecloser,theysawthatitwaslargeandflatwithmulticoloredlightsandmanyrowsofwindows.WhenBarneylookedatthecraftthroughhisbinoculars(雙筒望遠(yuǎn)鏡),hereportedlysawcreaturesinsideit,oneofwhichappearedtobetheleader.Frightened,thecoupledrovehome.Severaldaysaftertheirsighting,Bettybegantohavenightmaresaboutbeinginsidethecraft.Later,underhypnosis(催眼狀態(tài)),thecouplerecalledhavingbeentakenintotheUFOandexperimentedupon.

WeretheHills,andthethousandsofotherpeoplewhosaytheyhavebeenabductedsincethen,tellingthetruth?SkepticsclaimthealienswithwraparoundeyesthatBarneydescribedairedonanepisodeof"OuterLimits"just12daysbeforethehypnosissessioninwhichhedescribedthem.

Butthestoriesofabducteesareremarkablysimilar.Manypeopledescribeanexaminationroominwhichtheirbodiesarepoked,proddedandstudiedinvariousways.

Thesememoriesmaysoundlikethestuffofimagination,butsomeresearcherssayalienabducteessharemanyofthesamestressdisordersymptomsaswarveterans.Whentheylistentoaudiotapesofsoundsthatmirrortheirexperiences,theyexhibitphysicalsymptoms—theirpalmssweat,theirmusclescontractandtheirheartrateincreases,HarvardUniversityresearcherRichardMcNallyreportedintheJuly2004issueofthejournalPsychologicalScience.

Also,thetimingoftheabductionstoriesappearstocoincidewiththesightingofUFOsnearby.Manyoftheabducteesarereportedasmissingwhentheyclaimtohavebeenabducted,andwhentheyreturn,theyhavestrangecutsandbruisesontheirbodies.mmCloseEncountersthroughoutHistory

AlthoughUFOsightingshavebecomemorecommoninthelasthalf-century,therehavebeensightingsofstrangeflyingobjectsrecordedthroughouttheages.AuthorErichVonDikenhaswrittenmorethantwodozenbooks,includingChariotsoftheGods?—UnsolvedMysteriesofthePast,claimingthatalienshavebeenvisitingEarthfortensofthousandsofyears.TheBible,hesays,isfilledwithreferencestoalienvisitors.Hecontendsthattheyhelpedbuildthepyramids,introducedartandsocialordertoancienthumansandeveninterbredwithourancestorstocreateourmodernspecies.

AncientIndiantextsreportedlydescribeflyingmachines,calledvimanas,usedbythegodstofightbattlesinthesky.Inonetext,vimanaconstructionisdescribed:...likeagreatflyingbirdoflightmaterial.Insideonemustputthemercuryenginewithitsironheatingapparatusunderneath.Bymeansofthepowerlatentinthemercurywhichsetsthedrivingwhirlwindinmotion,amansittinginsidemaytravelagreatdistanceinthesky...moveforwardsandbackwards.

ProbablythefirstmoderncloseencounterwithalienspacecraftoccurredonJune24,1947.AprivatepilotnamedKennethArnoldwasflyingnearMr.RainierinWashingtonstatewhenhespottednine,crescent-shapedflyingobjects.Heobservedtheobjectstobemovingatwellover1,000milesperhour,farfasterthananyman-madeaircraftcouldflyatthetime.Onereporterwritinguptheeventreferredtotheobjectsas"flyingsaucers(飛碟)",andthedescriptionstuck.
