Iwouldliketoextendmysinceregratitudetoallthosewhohavehelpedmewithmydissertation.Mydeepestgratitudegoesfirstandforemosttomytutor,Zhangshanshan,whohasdevotedalotoftimeandefforttohelpingandguidingme.Fromthechoiceofthesubjecttothefinalcompletionofthedissertation,shehasalwaysbeengivingmecarefulguidanceandrelentlesssupport.Besides,Iwouldliketoexpressmyappreciationtoalltheteachersfromforeignlanguagesdepartmentwiththeirdirectandindirecthelp.TheirprofoundknowledgeofEnglishhastriggeredmyloveforEnglishandIhavebenefitedalotfromtheircourses.IalsowanttosaythankstomydearclassmatesbeinggoodcompanyforfourDuetoit,mycampuslifehasbecomeanewhighlightinmylifeLastbutnotleast,mydeepestgratitudegoestomybelovedfamilyfortheircontinuoussupportandencouragement.TheyarethereasonIfightformylife.TheKiteRunneristhefirstandthemostwell-knownnovelbyAfghan-AmericanwriterKhaledHosseini,whonarratesthelifeofgrowthandsalvationWhethermanisgoodorevilbynatureisanissuethathasbeenarguedaboutbypeopleforthousandsofyears.Bydescribingandanalyzingthe“good”,“evil”andthe“redemption”ofthemaincharactersofthenovel,theauthorofthispaperhopestohelpthereadergetabetterunderstandingofthethemeofthenovel—Keywords:humanity;betrayal;redemption;spiritualIntroductionontheIntroductiononTheKiteAmir:TheFallenAmir’sBetrayalofFamilySocialAmir:TheOrdealofDarknessandInnerInnerTheRecoveryandRedemptionofAmirRiskHisLifetoSave目AnAnalysisofRecoveryandRedemptionofHumanityTheKiteIntroductionontheKhaledHosseini,amarvelouswriter,wasbornin1965inKabul,Afghanistan,movedtotheUnitedStateswithhisfamilyinhisearlyage.HosseinigraduatedfromtheUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiegoDepartmentofMedicine,nowlivesinCalifornia.JuvenileHosseinihasadreamofbeingawriter,buthenevertoldanyone.WhenhemovedtotheUnitedStates,hewas15,anddidn’tknowawordinEnglish.Therefore,thedreamofbeingawriterwasjustadream.Inordertofindastablejobinthefuture,hechoseawaythatmanyimmigrantswouldchoose-studymedicineandbecomeadoctor.SowhenTheKiterunnerjustpublished,doctorHosseinididnotchangehismindtobecomeadoctoreventhoughhewasthrilled.Andtheresponsetothisbookwasnotverysatisfactoryforthefirstyearafterbeingpublished.However,onthesecondyearafterthepublication,thisbookhadspreadtheworldandachievedgreatsuccess.Theplotofthenovelisfascinating,andthethemeofloveandsalvationisfulloftension,andallofthesehavemadethereadersdeeplyattracted.Afterthat,TheKiteRunnerwasontheNewYorkTimesbestsellerlistforalongtime.Andnow,heisnolongerdoctorHosseini,butasuccessfulwriter,peopleinbookstorewouldbeproudtoinvitehimover.InHosseini'searlyyears,Afghanistanhasn'tgainedfullstability.Peopleinaresufferingfromthenumeroustensionsandriotsfromtimetotime.Theyhavetowitnesstheirbeloveddieinfrontofthemandburycoldbodieswiththeirbarehands.It'scommonandalsoheartbreakingthatafewchildrenwoulddieduringtheirdreamseverynight,theymighthaveneverbaskloveorhappinessintheirshortlives.PerhapsthecruelfactandsituationwerethereasonsimpelHosseinitowritethisnovel.IntroductiononTheKiteTheKiteRunneristhemostwell-knownnovelbyKhaledHosseini.ThisnovelisaboutthelifeofaboynamedAmir.ThestorytookplaceinAfghanistanin1978.Becauseoftimidity,Amirbetrayedhislittlefriend,Hassan.EvenwhenAmirgrewupintoanadult,hecouldn’tgetoverit.Ultimately,Amirpluckedupcourageandtookactiontomakeuphisfaultsandachievedsalvation.Afghanistanisamultinationalcountry,mostcitizensareMuslims,andwhichdividedintoSunniandShi’a.PashtunsisthebiggestnationinAfghanistan,itoccupiesanimportantpositioninsociety,polity,economyandculture.ThemainbeliefofPashtunsisSunni,thelargestfactioninAfghanistan,theycalledthemselves“theorthodoxparty”.ThispartyisantagonistictoShi’a,whichHazarasbelieve.HazarasarethethirdpopulationinAfghanistanwhichwasdiscriminatedbyPashtunsandneglectedbytheCentralgovernmentformanyyears.InAfghansociety,hierarchyisconnectedwithnation.PashtunsaretheupperclassofAfghanistanwhileHazarasaremostlylowerclass.HossenivividlyreproducethenationalandclassrelationshipinAfghanistanthroughtherelationshipsofthecharactersinTheKiteRunner.TheinequalityinAmir’sfamilyreflectedtheinequalityinthesociety.AmirandhisfatherarePashtuns,whichmeanstheyarethemastersofthefamily.AliandHassanaretheirservants.EventhoughAmir'sfatherwasmoldedasaherointhisnovel,hestillhadaclassconsciousness.HecriedforAliandHassan'sleaving,buthenevermentionedthatAliwashisfriend.ThesuccessofthisnovelliesintheprofoundrevealofnationalandclassvaluesofthesocialconsciousnessofAfghanistanfromthecharacter'ssubtlewordsandbehaviors.ThisconceptisdeeplyrootedinAfghanteenager'sheartsthroughhistoricalprecipitation,andthusaffectanddeterminetherelationshipbetweenthecharacters.ThestoryofjuvenileAmirandHassantellsusthatthereisadeepriftandconflictbetweenmajorethnicandminoritiesunderneaththeimageofsocialstabilityinAfghanistanduringpeacetime.AsthetheconceptofclassinAfghanistanisrootedinunequalethnicrelations,ethnicconflictsareinevitable.Amirwasawealthychildgrewupwithhisservant,Hassan.Theyhungouttogetherallthetime.HassanshowedunconditionalloyaltytoAmirandalwayscoveredforhimwhenhemademistakes.Itseemedthattheyarethebestfriendforeachother.Nevertheless,AmirnevertreatedHassanasarealfriend.Duetothelackoffatherlylove,AmirwasjealousaboutHassanandplayedtrickonhimfromtimetotime.Duringthisprocess,Amir’ssoulwasabouttofalling.Afterthekite-fightingtournament,Amirtotallylosthisinnocentandkindpersonalities.Becauseofinnertimidityandeagerforrecognitionandlovefromhisfather,AmirbetrayedHassan,whohadalwaysbeenloyaltohim.WhenfacingHassan’sselflessdevotionandunconditionalloyalty,Amirfeltnothingbutashamed.Sohechosetoescape,andusedalietodriveHassanaway.WhenAmirreachedhismid-life,thementaltorturewerestilltakingoverhismind.Finally,acallfromRahimKhanhademboldenedAmirtotaketheinitiativetofaceupandmakeupforwhathehaddone.Atthattime,Amir’ssleepingsoulwereabouttobeawaked,inordertoobtainspiritualsalvation,Amirhasmadeagreatdealofeffort.Itispreciselythearduouscourse,Isupposethattosomeextent,itwasacontrastwithHassan’sdevotion,whichmakeshisspiritualsalvationmorethoroughandmoreimpressive.Thisbookfindthepowerofspiritualstabilityforus:Weneedtohavethecouragetofaceourownmistakes,notjustregret,notjustguiltandself-blame.What’smore,weshouldlearntoforgive.Forgivethosemistakesandshadows,thoseinjuries,getamorepositiveattitudetowardsthefuture.Becauseinreallife,it’shardforustoadmitourmistakesandbetruetoourselves.Peoplealwaysusedifferentliestoparalyzethemselves.Tosomeextent,eachofusmaybethekiterunner.Theflyingkitemightbeasymbolofsomecharactersthatweneedtohave,whichcanmakeusgrowupintoabetterperson.Wechaseandrununderit,nomatterhowbitterandtiredthingsare.Amir:TheFallenAmir'sBetrayalofAmir’sfatherhadbeenveryindifferenttoAmir,inordertogetrecognitionandlovefromfather,Amirtriedvariousmethods,includingattendingkite-fightingtournament.Kite-fightingtournamentwasheldeverywinter,andhadalmostbecamethemostimportantcompetitionforthechildreninKabul.Notspecifictochildren,thiscompetitionisalsoofgreatsignificancetoadults.Forkiterunners,themostcovetedprizewasthelastfallenkiteofawintertournament.Itwasatrophyofhonor,somethingtobedisplayedonamantleforgueststoadmire.(Hosseini,2003,p.53)Flyingkitesandrunningthemistheeventofthiscompetition.Duringthecompetition,havingagoodrunneristhekeyelementtowinthecompetition,andHassanwasaverygoodrunner.ThankstoHassan,Amirwonnotonlythetriumphbutalsohisfather’srecognitionthroughthecompetition.However,Amirlostonething,probablyoneofthemostimportantthinginhislife--hisbestfriend.WhenHassanwasruningforthekite,hewasblockedoutofhiswayhomebyAssef,AssefthreatenedHassantogavehimthekite,whichwasasymboloftriumph.EventhoughHassanwasscared,hestilltightlyheldthekiteinhishandandrejectAssef’srudedemand.AssefkeptinsultingHassanwithfilthywords.ButHassanwon’tyieldeasily.SoAssefdecidedtodidahorriblethingtogiveHassanalesson,herapedHassan.Amirwitnessedthewholeprocess,buthewastooscaredtodoanything.Heusedaexcusetopersuadehimselftoranaway.Iactuallyaspiredtocowardice,becausethealternative,therealreasonIwasrunning,wasthatAssefwasright:Nothingwasfreeinthisworld.MaybeHassanwasthepriceIhadtopay,thelambIhadtoslay,towinBaba.Wasitafairprice?(Hosseini,2003,p.79)Whenhecamebackhome,hetrulywonhisfather’slove,aswellascomplimentsfromothers.Infact,HassanknewthatAmirwastherewhenhewasraped,buthechosetoforbear,andpretendednothinghashappenedjustasAmirdid.AlthoughHassanhadbeentryingtorepairtherelationshipbetweenthem,Amirstillcouldn’tfaceHassan,andfoundwaystoescapefromhim.However,themoreAmirtriedtoescape,themorehecouldfeltabouthisweakness,what;sworse,hekeptrecallingthedaywhenhebetrayedHassan.SohewantedtoangerHassan,andletHassantookrevengeonhim,sothathecouldreducehissenseofguilt.However,askindandloyalasHassanwas,hewouldneverbetrayedhisyoungmaster-Amir.WhenAmirkeptthrowingpomegranesathim,hejuststoodthere,doingnothing.AndeventriedtothrowpomegranateathimselftoshowhisloyaltyforAmir.ThatseemstobeveryironictoAmir.Inordertofindthewaytoself-relieve,Amirtookamoreextremeway.Insteadoffacinghisownfaultandmakingitup,heliedandframedHassanup.Beyondhisexpectation,Hassancoveredhimagain,forthelasttimeofhislife,andgonewithhisfather,withnothingtosayandWhatAmirdestroyedwasnotonlythefriendshipbetweenhimandHassan,butalsothefriendshipbetweenAliandpapa,whichlastedforover40years.Amir’sdadwasfrustratedaboutAliandHassan’sleaving.Hekeptbeggingthemtostay.ButtheirheartweredeeplyhurtbyAmir.AliwasverydisappointedwithAmirandhecouldn’tstandhissonbeingbulliedandgettinghurtagain.ReasonsforAmir'sFamilyAmirwaslivedinawealthyandfamousfamily,itseemedthathegotnothingtoworryaboutanddidn’tlackanything.However,helackedthemostimportantthing-maternallove.Hismotherdiedwhengivingbirthtohim.Therefore,helosttheprivilegetoenjoymaternallove.Hehardlyhadanymemoriesofhismother’s.Withoutlovefrommother,Amirwasinstinctivelylookingforlovefromfather,andhewantedtogotallthelovefromhisfather.However,Amir’sfatherwasindifferenttohim.WhenAmir’sfatheraskedhimaboutthekite-fightingtournament,hisonlythoughttheresolutionthatIwouldwinthatwinter'stournament.Iwasgoingtowin.Therewasnootherviableoption.Iwasgoingtowin,andIwasgoingtorunthatlastkite.ThenI'dbringitHomeandshowittoBaba.Showhimonceandforallthathissonwasworthy.Thenmaybemylifeasaghostinthishousewouldfinallybeover.(Hosseini,2003,p.58)Asamatteroffact,Amir’sfathertendedtojudgeAmirwithhisstandard.HehardlyconsiderfromAmir’sperspective.SohethoughtAmirwasweakandtimid,whichmadehimdisappointed.AndAmir’shobbieslikewritingmadehimreckonedthatAmirwasn’tmanlyenough.Onthecontrary,Hassanwasbrave,outgoingandgoodatsports,sohealwaysshowedappreciationandrecognitiontoHassan,whichmadeAmirjealousandscared.HewasafraidthatHassanmightstealhisfatherawayfromhim.Heevendidn’tdaretothrowupbecausehisfatherthoughtvomitwashumiliating.WhenhewitnessHassangettingraped,heregardHassan’sbeingbulliedasthepaytowinhisfather’sloveandrecognition.Frommypointsofview,Amir’sfather,tosomeextent,wasacombinationofbAmirandHassan.Hesaidthattheftisthesourceofallcrimes,HeandAli'swifegavebirthtoHassan,whichstoleAli’sloyalty,andheconcealedthisfactfromAmir,whichdeprivedAmir’srighttoknowaboutthetruth.HehidesthefactthatHassanwashisson,whichstoleHassan’ssocialidentity.RahimKhansaid:"Whenevilleadstogooddeeds,thatistherealsalvation."SoAmir'sfatherdidcharityforhiswholelife,builtsolitudehomes,helpedthoseinneed,prayforhisownsins,andreceivedrespectandlovefromothersatthesametime.ThereasonwhyAmir’sfathertreatedAmirwithnothingbutindifferenceandrejectionwasthathethoughtAmirwascowardlyandtrickyandhecouldseethosecharacteristicsfromhimself.Tosomeextent,Amir’sfather’sbehavioralsoshowshisdisgustandregretfortheinferiorityofhisowncharacteristics.Ontheotherhand,Hassanwasbrave,loyalandselfless,whichwaswhatherespectedandproudof.Soitisfairtosaythatthetwosons,AmirandHassan,representthetwosidesofAmir’sfather’sSocialUnderthebackgroundofthenovel,Afghanistanisamonarchicalcountrywitharigidhierarchy.LivinginthecapitalofthecountrymadeAmirandHassanhadhierarchicalconceptwhentheywerestillchildren,whichwouldbenaturallyandsubconciouslyinstilledintheirbehaviors.AlmostveryPashtunshaveasenseofsuperiorityabouttheirhierarchy.ThisclassdominatedinAfghanistan,whileHazarawasarelativelylowerclass.Mostofthemwereservantsorworkers.AmirwasPashtunswhileHassanwasHazara,AmirandHassanwereborninthesamehouseandatethesamefood,theygrewuptogether,theculturalbackgroundandthehierarchycouldn’tchangethefactthattheyaccompaniedeachotherforalongtime,butalsocouldn’tchangethefactthatalloftheseelementshadhinderedthemfrombecomingtrulygoodfriend.InAmir’smind,Hassanwashisbestandthemostloyalpartner,buttheywerenotfriendbecausetherewasanationalgapbetweenthem.Nomatterwhat,therewouldbenotruefriendshipbetweenthem.AmirneverinvitedHassanwhenhewasplayingwithothers.HethoughtHassanonlycouldplayedwithhimwhentherewasnoonebeside.Therefore,whenHassanpointedoutthemistakesofAmir’sessay,hewasactedlike:Heisjustailliterate,howdarehim?Hewasjustaservantwhocouldonlyworkinthekitchen.Familycanberegardedasaepitomeofsociety.ItreflectedinequalityofthesocielclassinequalityinAfghanistan.Wecanalsoinferthiskindofsocialrelationshipfromothercharactersthroughthisnovel.Assefisthemainnegativecharacterinthenovel,andhewasborninarichfamily.HethoughtonlyPashitunswastherealAfghans,andtheyshouldgovernAfghganistanonceandforall.HazaraslikeAliandHassanshouldbeexpelledfromAfghanistan.HethoughtitwasabsurdthatamasterfromPashtunsandaservantfromHazaracanbecomefriendorplaymate.PeoplelikehimthoughtthesekindofbehaviorswouldtarnishthereputationofPashtuns.Amironcereadinahistoricalbook:Init,Ireadthatmypeople,thePashtuns,hadpersecutedandoppressedtheHazaras.ItsaidtheHazarashadtriedtoriseagainstthePashtunsinthenineteenthcentury,butthePashtunshad"quelledthemunspeakableviolence."(Hosseini,2003,p.ThisdetailreflectsthehistoricaloriginsoftheAfghannationalconflict,thenationalconflictsharpenedduringtheSovietinvasionandTaliban'sreign,thenovelalsoreflectsthehistoryofthisethnicconflict.Furthermore,Inthenovel,whensomeother"smallguys"mentionedaboutHazara,theyallshowedasenseofcontemptandsuperiority,suchasthesoldierwhoinsultedHassanorthepeopleAmirmetwhenhecamebacktoAfghanistan,theyallhavethesamereaction:HassanwasjustaHazara,andhewasluckytohaveamasterlikeAmir.Therefore,whenHassansacrificedforAmir,Amirunconsciouslycameupwithareasontoranaway,HewasjustaHazara,wasn’the?(Hosseini,2003,p.Theinequalityoftheidentitieshadahugeinfluenceontheirfriendship.HassanalwaysshowedunconditionalloyaltytoAmir,andAmirjusttookifforgranted.HealwayscoveredforAmirwhenAmirmademistakes.WhenAmirdeliberatelyangeredHassansothatHassancouldtookavengeonhim,Hassanendureditsilently,becausehisclassandreligiousbeliefdidnotallowhimtobetrayhismaster.Thedeeperthegapbetweenthem,themorepaintheywouldAmir:TheOrdealofDarknessandInnerAfterHassan’sleaving,EventhoughAmirhadgothisfather’sloveandrecognition,adeepersenseofguiltycamealongandbewithhimallthetime.Heevengotinsomniabecauseofthat.ItisdifficulttoimagineHassan’sfeelingwhenheleavedwithAli,Hemightbeangryorcouldn’tunderstand.ForAmir,itmightbejustapatheticfaultthatapoorchildwantedtogotcomplimentfromhisownfather.Tosomeextend,itmightbeanecessarytestwhenhewasabouttoembarkonhislifeofgrowth.However,evenifthisterriblethingdidnothappen,som
