4.CaseAnalysisofTranslationofLv’sChineseVersionofMan’sSearchforMeaning4.1LexicallevelTranslationisbasedonunderstanding.Differentunderstanding,ofcourse,willhavedifferenttranslation.Understandingtheconnotationoftranslationandwhattranslatorshavedoneisthepremiseofunderstandingtheideasandtheoriesexpressedintranslation.Theprimarytaskoftranslationistheregenerationofsymbolicmeaning.Inotherwords,translationistheregenerationofmeaning.Becausegoodprofessionaltranslationisnotonlytheliteralunderstandingandliteraltranslation,butalsothetranslationwithrichculturalconnotation,richideologicalconnotationandrichemotionalconnotation.Inlexicallevel,therearethreeaspects:literaltranslation,translationwithadditionandtranslationwithdeletion.Althoughineachofthemtherearedifferentwaystotranslate,theycouldallconveythebettermeaningandconnotationtothereadersintheirownways.4.1.1LiteralTranslationLiteraltranslationreferstothetranslationthatadoptstheexpressionmethodsoforiginalswithouttoomuchadjustmentsonthesentencestructureandthewordorder.Itcouldnotonlyremainthecharacteristicsoforiginalsbutalsomakereadersaccepttheliterarystylesoforiginalsgenerally,promotethediversityoflanguageandenrichthelinguisticformsoftargetlanguage,whichisbeneficialtotransculturalcommunicationandinterchanges.InLv’sChineseversionofMan’sSearchforMeaning,therearesomeexamplesjustasthefollowings:Theexistentialvacuum存在之虛無(wú)Existentialfrustration存在之挫折So,inthesesituations,literaltranslationcouldwellshowthemeaningsandconnotationoftheoriginal.Ingeneral,wewoulduseliteraltranslation.Butifliteraltranslationcouldnotconveycorrectmeaningorbetterconnotation,weshouldusefreetranslationsuitably.Forexample:Thewilltomeaning追求意義“Will”means“意志”originally,and“meaning”means“意義”.Withoutfreetranslation,thisphrasewouldbetranslatedinto“意義的意志”,whichwouldconfusereaders.Thus,Lvusedfreetranslationandtranslateditinto“追求意義”,whichconveyedclearmeaning.Nomatterusingliteraltranslationorfreetranslation,understandingtheoriginalisalwaysthepremise.Whileusingliteraltranslation,translatorsshouldtranslateasreasonableaspossibletomakereadersunderstandthetranslationmoreeasily.Otherwise,thetranslationmaybeword-for-wordtranslationordeadtranslation.Whileusingfreetranslation,translatorsshouldpayattentiontofactualbasisbutnotcreatesomethingoutofnothingorfabricatesomethingcasually.Therefore,translatorsshoulduseliteraltranslationandfreetranslationproperly.Inthisway,LvNadidwellintheChineseversionofMan’sSearchforMeaning.4.1.2AdditionAlthoughweusuallyuseliteraltranslationandfreetranslation,sometimesweshouldaddsomethingintranslationtomakereadersunderstandmoreeasilyduetodifferentculturalbackgroundsoftwolanguages.Therearesomeexamplesasthefollowings:Alogodrama意義治療的心理劇“Logos”isaGreekword,whichmeans“意義”.So,iflogodramawastranslatedinto“意義戲劇”,itcouldnotwellconveyFrankl’smeaningaboutlogotherapy,andreaderscouldneitherwellunderstandtheitsconnectionwithlogotherapy.So,translating“l(fā)ogodrama”into“意義治療的心理劇”isbetter.ThereisanotherexamplethatcouldalsoshowLv’swelluseoftranslationwithaddition:Defensemechanism心理防御機(jī)制Inthisexample,LvNaadded“心理”inhertranslation,whichiswellconnectedwiththethemeofthisbookandmakesreaderscomprehenditmoreeasily.4.1.3DeletionInadditiontotranslationwithaddition,translationwithdeletionisalsoneededsometimes. So,without“簡(jiǎn)述”,“意義療法”showsmoreconcision,anditalsoshowsLvNa’swelltranslationwithdeletion.4.2SyntacticlevelBecauseEnglishbelongstoIndo-EuropeanlanguagesandChinesebelongstoSino-Tibetanlanguages,thesentencestructuresofthesetwolanguagesarequitedifferent.Therefore,itneedstranslatorstohavestronglanguagefoundation,clearlyknowingbothEnglishsentencestructureandChinesesentencestructure.Onlywiththisconditioncantranslatorsmakenaturalandfluenttranslationconvenienttothepeopleofthetargetlanguage.4.2.1ReconstructionDuetobelongingtodifferentlanguages,translatorsshouldhavesomereconstructioninsentenceswhiletranslating.Example:Itisobviousthatinnoogeniccasestheappropriateandadequatetherapyisnotpsychotherapyingeneralbutratherlogotherapy;atherapy,thatis,whichdarestoenterthespecificallyhumandimension.Translation:顯而易見(jiàn),治療意源性神經(jīng)官能癥最適當(dāng)、最有效的辦法不是一般意義上的心理療法,而是意義療法,只有意義療法能夠突出人特有的意識(shí)。Inthisexample,LvNatranslated“itisobvious”into“顯而易見(jiàn)”andputitonthepositionofadverbialmodifiertoshowtheauthor’sattitude.Inthelaterpart,sheusedthesentencepattern“只有……能……”toshowemphasize“l(fā)ogotherapy”,whichisconformtoFrankl’smeaningintheoriginal.4.2.2Semantic&structuralundulatenessInChinesesentences,clausesareoftennotparalleltoeachother.ThestructureofChinesesentencesusuallyhascleardistinction,whichdividesintothemaininformationandbackgroundinformationclearly.Forexample:Example:Man,however,isabletoliveandeventodieforthesakeofhisidealsandvalues!Translation:人,能夠?yàn)榱俗约旱睦硐牒蛢r(jià)值而活,甚至為此付出生命!Inthisexam
