Sadlytheabundanceofpassengerpigeonsmayhavebeentheirundoing.Wherethebirdswere
mostabundant,peoplebelievedtherewasanever-lastingsupplyandkilledthembythethousands,
Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswherepassengerpigeonsnestedhad
beendamagedbyAmerican'sneedforwood,whichscattered(驅(qū)散)theflocksandforcedthebirdsto
gofarthernorth,wherecoldtemperaturesandstormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocks
weregone,nevertobeseenagain.
In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingthekillingofpassengerpigeonsbutbythen,
nosizableflockshadbeenseeninthestatefor10years.ThelastconfirmedwipigeonintheUnited
care.Thelastofthem,knownaffectionatelyasMartha,diedattheCincinnatiZoologicalGardenon
September1,1914.

DocumentingtheThangmilanguageandcultureisjustastartingpointforTurin,whoseekstoincludeother
languagesandoraltraditionsacrosstheHimalayanreachesofIndia,Nepal,Bhutan,andChina.Butheisnot
contenttosimplyrecordthesevoicesbeforetheydisappearwithoutrecord.
AttheUniversityofCambridgeTurindiscoveredawealthofimportantmaterials-includingphotographs,
films,taperecordings,andfieldnotes—whichhadremainedunstudiedandwerebadlyinneedofcareand
protection.
Now,throughthetwoorganizationsthathehasfounded-theDigitalHimalayaProjectandtheWorldOral
LiteratureProject_Turinhasstartedacampaigntomakesuchdocuments,fortheworldavailablenotjustto
