Equality&DiversityPolicy

Introduction

1.1TheEqualityAct2010replacesandincorporatesallanti-discriminationlawsintoa

asingleact.

1.2TheEqualityandDiversityPolicyseekstoensurethatReaseheathCollegeisfully

committedtoensuringequalityofopportunityandfairnessinallareasofemployment

andeducation.

AllmembersoftheCollegecommunityarerequiredtopromoteequalityof

opportunityandwillreceiveequalityanddiversitytrainingtoachievethisaim.

1.4TheCollegeBoardbelievesitsemployeesandlearnersarethekeytoitseffectiveness.

TobesuccessfultheCollegeaimstoappoint,developandmotivateemployeesofqualityandcreateaworkingenvironmentwhichencourageshighperformance,trustandco-operationbetweenindividualsandteams.Equality&diversityisfundamentaltotheachievementofthisaim.

TheEqualityandDiversityPolicyappliestoallmembersoftheCollegecommunity

including:

allemployees,

potentiallearnerapplicantsapplyingforcoursesattheCollege

alllearners,

thirdpartypartners/contractors,and

visitorstotheCollege,

TheCollegewillthroughitscommitmenttoEqualityandDiversityensurethatallindividualsareabletoachievetheirfullpotentialandrealisetheirpersonalgoalsirrespectiveof:

Marriageandcivilpartnership

Pregnancyandmaternity

Race

Religionorbelief

Sex

Sexualorientation

TheCollegewillbothasanEmployerandasaProviderofEducationandTrainingworktowardseliminatingunlawfuldiscrimination,harassmentorvictimisationonthegroundsofeachofthenine‘protectedcharacteristics’outlinedintheEqualityAct2010andwillworktowardseliminatingdiscriminationonthegroundsofaperceivedorassociativeprotectivecharacteristic;therebypromotinganenvironmentwhereallindividualsfeelvalued,safe,includedandrespected.

1.8TheCollegestaffrecruitmentandselectionprocess,policiesandpracticearedesignedtoensurewhenemploymentdecisionsaremadethattheyarebasedsolelyontheskillsandqualitiesrequiredforthepositionandcomplywithallrelevantemploymentlegislationandbestpracticestandards.

1.9TheCollegewillcontinuallystrivetoenhanceits‘positiveenvironment’byvaluing

differenceandrecognisingthatpeoplewithdifferentbackgrounds,experience,

skillsandattitudesintroducenewideasanddevelopincreasedawareness,

understandingandharmonywithintheCollegecommunity.

1.10TheCollegewillcontinuetodevelopandstrengthenengagementwithcommunity

groupstoensureafullunderstandingisachievedforlearnersandstaffofminority

groupissues.

1.11Alllearnerswillbeencouragedtoparticipateinlearningprogrammeswhichreflectandvaluepeopleregardlessofmaritalandcivilpartnership,pregnancyandmaternity,familyresponsibilities,sex,sexualorientation,race,religionorbelief,genderreassignment,disability,age,socio-economic/geographicfactorssoasto:

fosterharmony,understandingandsupport

enablelearnerstorecogniseandcounterallformsofprejudiceand

enablelearnersfromacrossthelearningcommunitytotakepartinlearningprogrammes

1.12TheCollegestaffdevelopmentprogrammeandlearnercurriculumwillallowforawiderangeofteachingmethodsandresourcestopromoteinclusivityandsensitivitytoissuesofequalityanddiversityandtheopportunityforstaffandlearnerstohaveequalityofopportunitytoachievetheirpotentialwhilstsettingdeliberategoalsthatlookbeyondtheCollegeexperienceintothepost-Collegeworld.

TheCollegewillthroughregularmonitoringandreviewidentifystrategiestoreduce

anyidentifiedachievementshortfallstherebyensuringallstaffandlearners

attainmaximumbenefit

TheCollegewillseektheopinionsofstaff,learnersandexternalpartnerstoinformof

potentialopportunitiestoimproveCollegepractices.

1.15TheCollegewilllooktodevelopnewwaysinwhichitcanpromoteitsongoing

commitmenttoinclusivitywhereallindividualsaretreatedfairlyandwithrespect

1.16TheCollegewillrequireallpartners/thirdpartycontractorstobeawareofthe

importanceplacedonequalityanddiversitybytheCollegeandtheneedtocomplywith

thedutiesoftheEqualityandDiversityPolicy.

1.17TheCollegewillformallyrecordandpubliciseinaccordancewithstatutory

requirementsinformationtocomplywiththeEqualityAct2010publicsectorgeneral

equalityduties.

2. Corporateandindividualresponsibilities

Corporateresponsibility

TheCollegescorporateresponsibilities,togetherwiththeresponsibilitiesofindividual

membersoftheCollege,areexplainedbelow:

AllemployeesofReaseheathCollegehavearesponsibilitytocomplywiththeEquality

andDiversityPolicy.

2.2ThePolicyformspartoftheformalcontractofemploymentforstaff,failuretocomplycouldresultindisciplinaryproceedings.Incertaincircumstances,abreachoftheEqualityandDiversityPolicymayconstituteacriminaloffenceandtheCollegemayberequiredtoreportthemattertothepolice.

2.3Staffresponsibilities:

musttreatallindividualsfairly,withdignityandrespect

mustcomplywithallCollegepolicies,bestpracticestandardsandpromoteanenvironmentwhereeveryonefeelssafe,supportiveandincluded

mustreportallincidentswhereabreachofequalityanddiversityhasoccurred

mustcomplywithallequalityanddiversityinitiatives

2.4Manager/Supervisoryresponsibilities:

mustfosteraCollegeenvironmentfreeofbullying,harassmentanddiscrimination

musttakeappropriateactioninaccordancewithCollegepoliciesandproceduresin

circumstanceswhereabreachofequalityanddiversityhasoccurred

mustnotdiscriminateunfairlyinthewayaserviceonbehalfoftheCollegeis

providedorservicesprocured

mustnotdiscriminateunfairlyifinvolvedintherecruitment,promotionand

managementofstaff,orintheselectionandsupervisionofstudents

2.5Learner’sresponsibilities

-musttreatallindividualsfairly,withdignityandrespect

mustcomplywithallCollegepolicies,bestpracticestandardsandpromotean

environmentwhereeveryonefeelssafe,supportiveandincluded

mustreportallincidentswhereabreachofequalityanddiversityhasoccurred

-mustcomplywithallequalityanddiversityinitiatives

2.6CollegePartners/ThirdPartyContractors

AllCollegepartners/ThirdPartyContractorsareexpectedtocomplywiththeEqualityandDiversityPolicy.

ItisarequirementofstafftobringtotheattentionofallCollegePartners/ThirdPartyContractors(includingWorkplacementProviders)theCollegeEqualityandDiversityPolicyandseekassuranceregardingthethirdpartyorganisationsapproachtoequalityanddiversityintheworkplace.

3.MonitoringandReview

3.1TheEqualityandDiversityPolicywillbereviewedannually.Onoccasionanearlier

amendmentmayberequiredtoreflectalegislativechange,bestpracticestandardor

Collegeproceduralamendment.

3.2ThePolicyshouldnotbereadinisolation,butcrossreferencedwithallrelevantCollege

employmentandstudentpolicies

3.3Theeffectivenessofthispolicyintermsofbothcontentandimplementation,willbejudgedthroughcontinuedmonitoringandevaluation.

3.4TheCollegeSingleEqualityandDiversitydevelopmentplanidentifiesarangeofactionsforimplementationandismonitoredonatermlybasis.

3.5TomonitortheeffectivenessofEqualityandDiversitywithintheCollege,thefollowinginformationwillbereviewedandreportedonineachofthe‘protectedcharacteristics’identifiedinparagraph1.6.
