Stereotypingisassumingthatapersonhascertainqualities(goodorbad)justbecausethepersonisamemberofaspecificgroup(Jandt,2001).Anexampleofastereotypeisthebeliefthatonegroupofpeopleislazyorpoor,orthatanotherissmartorromantic.Astereotypeisanoversimplifiedstatementbasedonasinglecharacteristic.Theyareoftenbasedonfaultyinformation,theygetinthewayofknowingpeopleasindividuals,andtheycanleadtoseriousmisunderstandings.Stereotypingisgrosssimplificationthatpreventsamoreprofoundunderstandingofothersasindividualsandasmembersofsocialgroups,anditpreventsourdealingeffectivelywithmembersofothersocieties.Stereotypescanhaveanegativeeffectwhenpeopleusethemtointerpretbehavior.Theyareprobablythemostdifficultstumblingblocktoovercomeincross-culturalcommunication.
