Nyadthenturnedfromspeedswimmingtodistanceswimming.Herfirstracewas10milesin

evertocompletethecourse.In1974,Nyadsetarecordwhileswimminga22-mileraceintheBay

ofNaples,Italy.ThatsameyearshetriedtoswimbackandforthacrossLakeOntario,a

totalof64miles.Nyadmadeitacrossthelake,butonthereturntrip,shelostconsciousnessand

hadtobepulledfromthewater.In1975,sheswamaroundManhattanIsland,adistanceof28

miles,inarecordof7hoursand57minutes.Threeyearslatersheswam102milesfromthe

BahamastoFlorida.

In2010,attheageof61,NyadannouncedshewouldswimfromCubatoFlorida.Inorderto

train,Nyadspentasmanyas14hoursadayswimmingintheocean.TheswimfromCubato

Floridawouldlastatleast60hoursandcover103miles.Unfortunately,badweatherforcedNyad

towaituntilthenextyear.In2011,Nyadattemptedtheswimbutwasblownoffcourseafterbeing

inthewaterfor29hours.Nyadattemptedtheswimagainafewmonthslater,butshehadtostop

becauseoftoomanyjellyfishstings(海螢蠶傷).
