neededfortheapplication.Aftercountlessinterviewsandpresentations,Imanagedtostand

outamongthecandidatesandsurvivethetestalone.Severalmonthslater,Ifinallyreceiveda

callaskingmetoreportforduty.IwouldbegoingtoasmallvillagenearAbuja,Nigeria.

Where?What?Nigeria?Ihadnoidea.ButIwasabouttofindout.

Aftercompletingmytraining,Iwassenttothevillagethatwassmallanddesperatelyin

needofproperaccommodation.Thoughthelocalvillagerswerepoor,theyofferedtheir

homes,food,andheartsasifIweretheirownfamily.Iwasaskedtoleadasmallteamof

localpeopleinbuildinganewschoolhouse.Forthenextyearorso,Itaughtinthatsame

schoolhouse.ButIsometimesthinkIlearnedmorefrommystudentsthantheydidfromme.

Sometimeduringthatperiod,Irealizedthatallthosethingsthathadseemedsostrange

orunusualtomenolongerdid,thoughIdidnotgetanywherewiththelocallanguage,and

returnedtotheUnitedStatesadifferentman.TheLighthouseProjecthadchangedmylife
