comedownto$50billion.Butthemarketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecauseitbrings
togethergreatwealth,enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfew
otherindustries.
IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMr.Hirst'ssale,spendingofanysortbecamedeeply
unfashionable,especiallyinNewYork,wherethebail-outofthebankscoincidedwiththelossof
