In1869,MexicanGeneralAntonioLopezdeSantaAnnatoldhisideaofchicle(糖
膠樹膠)toThomasAdams.Adamstriedtomaketoys,masks,andrainbootsoutofchicle,
butnoneofhisproductswerecommerciallysuccessful.Thenhesimplyaddedflavor
tothechicle!Thatwasthefirststepincreatingtheworld*sfirstmodernchewing
gum!ThefirstmassmarketedchewinggumwascalledAdamsNewYorkChewingGum.In
the1870s,Adams&Sonssold“SourOrange"flavoredgumasanafter-dinnercandy.In
1871ThomasAdamspatentedamachineforthema,allthesekindsofgumhadonebig
problem:theycouldnotholdflavor.
Theproblemwithholdingflavorwasnotfixeduntil1880,whenWilliamWhite
combinedsugarandcornsyrupwithchicle.Forbettertasteheaddedpeppermintextract
