RalphWaldoEmersonwasborninBoston.At14,hewenttoHarvardCollege.In1829,hetraveledtoEuropeandvisitedwriterssuchasRand,Coleridge,CarlisleandWordsworth,whohadagreatinfluenceonhisTranscendentalism.Afterreturningtohishomeland,hebeganhisspeechandwritingcareer.In1836,Naturewaspublished.In1837,hegaveaspeech,titledasTheAmericanScholar,whichwascalledtheAmerican"IntellectualDeclarationofIndependence"bythepoetHolmes.Emersonpreachedthattheindividualisthewholeuniversethroughspeechesandessays,andhisthoughtsbecameanimportantcornerstoneofAmericanindividualismideology.

Emerson’swritingstyleisacombinationofliteratureandphilosophy,andhislanguageisuniqueanddifficulttounderstand.HistranscendentalismisundoubtedlyaveryoriginalideologicalmovementincontemporaryAmericansociety,whichhasinfluencedgenerationsofAmericans.
