Introduction

Generativeartificialintelligence(AI)1hasquicklybecomeanintegralpartofthedigitallandscape,shapinghowindividualsinteractwithtechnologyandcreatingnewopportunitiesforcreativityandinnovation.Atthesametime,generativeAIbringsrealandunknownrisks,includingthoserelatedtoprivacy,equity,andaccuracy.Ofparticularimportanceisitsinfluenceonyoungpeople,whonotonlyserveasearlyadoptersandinfluencersinthedigitalrealmbutalsostandattheforefrontofgrapplingwithitsimplications.

Understandingyoungpeople’sperspectivesongenerativeAIisparamount,especiallyconsideringongoingapprehensionsabouttheeffectsofdigitaltechnologiesonyouthmentalhealth.2Asgener-ativeAIbecomesmoreintegratedintodailylifeacrossdifferentdomains,includingjobs,schools,andsocialinteractions,thereisaneedtodelvedeeperintoitsuseamongyoungpeopletoguidepracticeandpolicy-makingdecisionsandfosteramoreinformeddialogueonitsutilization.Byex-aminingtheirreasonsforusingornotusinggen-erativeAItools,wecanuncoverunderlyingmotiva-tionsandconcernsinfluencingyouthengagementwiththistechnology.Moreover,analyzinggen-erativeAIusebyrace/ethnicity,age,gender,andLGBTQ+identity3allowsanuancedunderstanding

ofhowdifferentdemographicgroupscurrentlyper-ceiveandinteractwithgenerativeAItechnology.

Findingsinthisreportprimarilycomefromalarg-ernationalsurveyofdigitaltechnologyandyouthmentalhealth4(CommonSenseMedia&Hopelab,2024).Thisstudycenteredyoungpeopleinthecreationofsurveytopicsandquestions,aswellastheinterpretationofresults.ThequestionsintheAppendix,includingcontentandspecificwording,weredevelopedthroughinterviews,focusgroups,anditemtestingwithyoungpeople.

ThisreportexaminesdifferencesinexperiencesandperceptionsofgenerativeAIacrossracialandethnicgroups,betweenteens(ages14-17)andyoungadults(ages18-22),andacrossLGBTQ+andgenderidentities.Wealsoutilizedopen-endedquestionstoprovidemoredetailedcontextaboutgenerativeAIuse,concerns,andexcitementamongyoungpeople.Additionally,sinceteens’useofAI5mightbemoreheavilymonitoredorinfluencedbyparentsandotheradults,weincludeddatafromaseparatesurvey(CenterforDigitalThriving&CommonSenseMedia,forthcoming)thatcon-tainedanopen-endedquestionaskingteens(ages13-17)todescribeonethingtheywantedadultstoknowabouthowteensuseAI.

abouttheaccessibilityofsomuchknowledgeandinformation.Whenitcametocreativity,thereisexcitementaboutthepotentialtoenhanceex-istingartisticendeavorsforthosewhoalreadyengagedincreativeactivities.Youngpeoplewhodescribethemselvesaslackingcreativityfeelgen-erativeAIcouldhelpthemgrowinthoseareas.

Youngpeopleanticipatingmostlynegativepersonalimpacts

highlightconcernsaboutthefutureofgenerativeAIrelatedtothelossofjobs,AItakingovertheworld,intellectualprop-ertytheft,misinformation/disinformation,andprivacy.

ManyofthesameareaswhereyoungpeopleseethepotentialbenefitsofgenerativeAIalsoemergeintheirconcerns.Forexample,amongthosewhoexpecttoseenegativeimpactsintheirlives,re-spondentsoftensharedthattheywereworriedaboutgenerativeAItakingoverjobopportunitiesaltogetherandnegativelyimpactingthecreativecommunity.Relatedtoprivacyconcerns,manyyoungpeopleareconcernedthattheproliferation

ofgenerativeAImightmakeiteasierfortheirpersonalinformationtobecompromised,stolen,andhacked.Youngpeoplealsodescribeharmsrelatedtocreatingandspreadingmisinformationanddisinformationonline,including“deepfakes”and“fakenews.”ThereisalsoamoregeneralandbroadfeardescribedbynumerousyoungpeopleasAI“takingover.”

Althoughmostyoungpeopleknowwhatgener-ativeAItoolsare,regularusehasyettobecomecommonplace.Approximatelyhalf(51%)ofteensandyoungadultsages14–22saytheyhaveusedgenerativeAItoolsatsomepoint;however,only4%saytheyusethemdaily.Forty-onepercentofyoungpeoplehaveneverusedthesetypesoftools,andanother8%areunfamiliarwiththem.

WhenlookingatthepercentageofyoungpeoplewhohaveeverusedgenerativeAItools,therearenosignificantdifferencesbyrace/ethnicity.However,somesubtledifferencesemergearoundlevelsofusage.BlackorLatinxyoungpeoplearetwiceaslikelytoreportusinggenerativeAItoolsonceortwiceaweekthanwhiteyoungpeople(16%and14%,respectivelyvs.7%).Whiteyoung

Genderdifferencesemergearoundboththeaware-nessanduseofgenerativeAI.MoremenandboyshaveeverusedgenerativeAIcomparedtowomenandgirls(53%vs.48%).Menandboysarealsomorelikelythanwomenandgirlstouseitonceortwiceaweek(14%vs.8%).Therearenosignificantdif-ferencesinthefrequencyofgenerativeAIusagebyLGBTQ+identityorage.

ReasonsforUsingGenerativeAI

YoungpeoplewhousegenerativeAIdosoforvariousreasons,primarilyrelatedtoinformationseeking,ideageneration,schoolwork,andcreativepursuits.AmongthosewhosaytheyhaveeverusedAI,53%saytheyarecurrentlyusingittogetinformation,and51%saytheyareusingitforbrainstorming.Forty-sixpercentsaytheyuseittohelpwithschool-work,and31%generatepicturesorimages.Fewerthan1in5reportusingittomakemusic(16%),forhelpintheirjob(16%),towritecode(15%),orforsomeotherreason(8%).

Severalsignificantdifferencesintheuseofgener-ativeAItogetinformationemerge.BlackyoungpeoplearemorelikelythantheirLatinxandwhitepeerstousegenerativeAItogetinformation,withLatinxyoungpeoplealsobeingsignificantlymorelikelytousegenerativeAIforthispurposethantheirwhitepeers(72%vs.54%vs.41%).MenandboysalsoreportusinggenerativeAImoreoftenthanwomenandgirlstogetinformation(57%vs.48%).CisgenderandstraightyoungpeoplearemorelikelytoreportusinggenerativeAItogetinforma-tionthanLGBTQ+youngpeople(54%vs.43%).

Acrosstheboard,variationsinusebydemographicgroupsarealsoprominentaroundusinggenera-tiveAItobrainstormideas.BlackyoungpeoplearemorelikelythantheirLatinxandwhitepeerstousegenerativeAItobrainstormideas(68%vs.51%and42%,respectively).Menandboysarealsomorelike-lytousegenerativeAItobrainstormideas(58%vs.48%)thanwomenandgirls.Further,cisgenderandstraightyoungpeoplewhousedgenerativeAIweremorelikelytodosoforbrainstormingideasthanLGBTQ+youngpeople(53%vs.41%).

Amongyoungpeoplewhohaven’tusedgenerativeAItools,theirreasonsfornotdoingsoarevaried.RegardingawarenessofandaccesstogenerativeAI,oneinfiveyoungpeopledonotknowthatthesetypesoftoolsexisted,andonein10reportsthattheydidnothaveaccess.7Alongwithawarenessandaccessgaps,23%haveneverusedgenerativeAItoolsbecausetheydon’tknowhow.Aboutathird(34%)believethatgenerativeAItoolswouldn’tbehelpfultothem.Otheryoungpeopleciteissuesrelatedtoprivacyandbiasasreasonsfornotus-inggenerativeAI:22%areconcernedaboutprivacyandsharinginformationwithanAItool,and17%haveheardthatAItoolsareinaccurateorbiasedintheinformationtheyprovide.Inaddition,someyouthchosenottousegenerativeAIduetoitsneg-ativeassociations.Morespecifically,aboutaquar-ter(24%)reportnotusingthesetoolsbecausetheyareassociatedwithcheatingorstealingtheworkofothers.Fewer(13%)saytheyhaven’tusedgenerativeAItoolsbecausetheydon’tthinkitwouldbefuntouse.
