Theresearchersconductedastudyinvolvingninediversegroupsofpeople,includinghunter-gatherersin

Mexico,farmersinEcuador,andresidentsofcitieslikeMexicoCityandBangkok.Theywerepresentedwithten

smells,rangingfromisovalericacidtovanillaextract,andaskedtoratethemaccordingtopleasantness.The

resultsshowedhighconsistencyacrosscultures,withisovalericaciduniversallydislikedandvanillaextract

mostlyenjoyed.

Interestingly,thechemicalcompositionofthesmellsaccountedfor41%ofthereactions,whilecultural

factorsonlyexplained6%.Itisquitedifferentinthecaseofvisualperceptionoffaces,whereaperson'sculture

makesup50%oftheexplanationforwhichfacestheyfindbeautiful.Meanwhile,theresearchersidentifiedan

“eyeofthebeholder“effectinourperceptionsofscent.Thisphenomenon,thoughlessobviousthaninvisual

perception,representsthepersonalpreferencesthatareshapedbyinfluencesoutsideindividualculture,

accountingfor54%ofthedifferencesinwhichsmellspeopleliked.
