responsiblefortheAcademysinabilitytoperceiveaccurately

authentictrendsintheliteraryworld.

Regardlessofconcernsovertheselectionprocess,however,it

seemsthattheprizewillcontinuetosurvivebothasanindicator

oftheliteraturethatwemosthighlypraise,andasanelusivegoal

thatwritersseek.Iffornootherreason,theprizewillcontinue

tobedesirableforthefinancialrewardsthataccompanyit;not

onlyisthecashprizeitselfconsiderable,butitalsodramatically

increasessalesofanauthorsbooks.

hopeofvictorywastoclosealltheportsofEuropetoBritishships.

Accordingly,FrancesetouttoovercomeBritainbyextendingits

militarydominationfromMoscowtLisbon,fromJutlandtoCaldaria.

Allofthisentailedtremendousrisk,becauseFrancedidnothave

themilitaryresourcestocontrolthismuchterritoryandstill

protectitselfandmaintainorderathome.

Frenchstrategistscalculatedthatanavyof150shipswould

providetheforcenecessarytodefeattheBritishnavy.Suchaforce

wouldgiveFranceathree-to-twoadvantageoverBritain.This
