Module 5 The Conquest of the Universe Cloning(建議用時(shí)40分鐘). 閱讀理解A(2017亳州模擬)Have you seen Jurassic Park? In this film, scientists use DNA kept for tens of millions of years to clone dinosaurs. They find trouble, however, when they realize that the cloned creatures are smarter and more dangerous than expected. Thats nothing more than a fiction. But could we really clone endangered animals? To date, the most successful attempt to do so was the cloning of a gaur, a rare ox-like animal from southeast Asia. Scientists used a cow to bring the cloned baby gaur, named Noah. Two days after birth, however, Noah died from a common bacterial infection. Other endangered species that may be cloned include the African bongo antelope(羚羊), the Sumatran tiger, the cheetah(獵豹), and the giant panda. Next, could we really clone extinct animals? In theory? Yes. To do this, you need a well-kept source of DNA from the extinct animals such as a woolly mammoth(毛象), a Tasmanian tiger, or even a dinosaur, and a closely related species, still living, which could serve as a surrogate mother. In reality? Probably not. On the one hand, its not likely that extinct animals DNA could survive undamaged for such a long time. Cloning extinct animals as a woolly mammoth, a Tasmanian tiger, or a dinosaur is much more difficult due to the lack of properly well-preserved DNA. On the other hand, for example, a gaur can have a cow as a surrogate mother, definitely not a monkey. But what about an extinct animal as unique as the panda? What species could possibly serve as a surrogate mother? Cloning presents many exciting possibilities. However, even if extinct animals are brought back, they could not survive in todays world. Not only do most extinct animals have no habitat to live in, but the other plants and animals they depended on for food may also be gone as well. 【文章大意】本文主要講了作者對(duì)克隆動(dòng)物的看法。1. We actually won the state championship. But, I didnt really play much. But I loved being a part of the team. I was a super fan and I had front row tickets to every game. On the bench. Every day after practice, I was the only one who showered in the locker rooms. The reason why I liked showering in the locker rooms was that it saved time. I just needed to throw my dirty clothes back into my gym locker and then change back into my clean clothes I wore from school and then I could go straight home or go out with my friends. The water was freezing cold. And thats why I was the only one who showered in these locker rooms. And at the time, I didnt know why I was doing it. The cold water was hard to bear. I would jump up and down and make strange noises. And all my teammates could see me. I was just a young 17-year old who didnt mind being watched. I remember people asking me why I did it and Id tell them that these cold showers helped build my character. What I have learned is how to deal with discomfort, hardship and so on. It taught me to get used to discomforts, because when your life becomes too comfortable, you reach a point of no return. It also helped me fight through any pain or hardship. And above all, cold showers have helped me learn to face discomfort bravely, so I can get through anything and get it done. The habits you build now are going to determine your future. How successful do you want to be? How much can you handle? What are you doing every day that is going to help you achieve your goals no matter what discomfort or troubles it brings? 6.
