encouraged the dry forest to surround him with a thick screen. the greener it became the easier it was to forget the outside. in time melio learnt how to live in spite of the difficulties up on that mountain shelf.his only neighbors were a family group of parakana indians who, for reasons known only to themselves, took a liking to melio. their chief never looked closely at melio and said to himself that this white man was as mad as a snake which chews off its own tail. the parakanas taught melio to catch fish with the help of a wild plant which made them senseless in the stream. it gave off a powerful drug when shaken violently through the water. they showed him how to hunt by laying traps and digging. in time melios piece of land became a regular farm. he had wild birds, fat long-legged ones and thin chickens, and his corn and salted fish was enough to keep him stocked up through the wet season.the parakanas were always around him. hed never admit it, but he could feel that the trees were like the rods of a prison; they were watching him. when they came to him, the indians never entered his house with its roof of dried grass and leaves. they showed themselves by standing in the shade of the trees at the clearings edge. melio could never persuade them to come any closer.the group guessed at melios hatred for his civilized brothers in the towns far away. they knew melio would never invite any more white men up here. this pleased the parakanas. it meant that traders looking for rubber and jewels would never reach them. their melio would see to that. they published online in current biology explains why. rachael jack, university of glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均勻的) across a face as westerners do, easterners fix their attention on the eyes. “we show that easterners and westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” jack said. “westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.” according to jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. as a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. the researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 western caucasian and 13 east asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. they compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. it turned out that easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did westerners. the cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions, jack said. our data suggest that whereas westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, easterners use the eyes more and mouth less. in short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. from here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified(多樣性) these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. otherwise, when communicating emotions across cultures, easterners and westerners will find themselves lost in translation.6. the discovery shows that westerners _ a. consider facial expressions universally reliable b. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth c. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways d. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions7. what were the people asked to do in the study? a.to classify some face pictures. b. to get their faces impressive. c.to make a face at each other.d. to observe the researchers faces.8. in comparison with westerners, easterners are likely to _ a. do translation more successfullyb. examine the eyes more attentively c.study the mouth more frequentlyd. read facial expressions more correctly9. what can be the best title for the passage? a. the eye as the window to the soul b. effective methods to develop social skills c. how to increase cross-cultural understanding d. cultural differences in reading emotionsdso bitter a dark winter day in 1942 was no different from any other day in this concentration camp. i was almost dead, surviving from day to day, since i was brought here with thousands of other jews. each day, as more disappeared, the hungry past seemed like a mere dream, and i sank deeper and deeper into despair(絕望).suddenly, i noticed a young girl, on the other side of the barbed wire, stopped and looked at me with sad eyes seeming to say that she understood. then she reached into her pocket, and pulled out a red apple. she looked cautiously to the left and the right and then with smile of triumph quickly threw the apple over the fence. i ran to pick it up, holding it in my trembling frozen fingers. her eyes twinkled. in my world of death this apple was an expression of life, of love.she came at the same time to the spot the next day. and again she brought me an apple flying it over the fence with that same sweet smile. for seven months we met like this. sometimes we exchanged a few words, sometimes just an apple. but one day i could barely speak as i said what must be said: “dont bring me an apple tomorrow. i am being sent to another camp.” turning before i lost all my control, i run away and i couldnt stand looking back.with months passing and nightmares continuing, the memory of this girl sustained me through the hopelessness. over and over in my mind, i saw her face, her kind eyes, i heard her gentle words, i tasted those apples. and then the war ended and i was freed. i lost everything that was precious to me including my family.but i still had the memory of this girl, a memory i carried in my heart and gave me the will to go on as i moved to america to start a new life. in the new york city a friend convinced me to go_on_a_blind_date with a girl named roma. reluctantly, i agreed. “where were you during the war?” roma asked me gently.“i was in a concentration camp in germany,” i replied.roma got a faraway look in her eyes, as if she was remembering something bittersweet.“what is it?” i asked.roma explained in a soft voice. “you see, when i was a young girl i lived near a concentration camp, where i used to visit a boy prisoner every day bringing him apples. i would throw the apple over the fence and he would be so happy.”roma sighed heavily and continued, “it is hard to describe how we felt about each otherafter all we were young and we only exchanged a few wordsbut i can tell there was much love there. but i cannot bear thinking that he was killed, and i try to remember him as he was for those months we were given together.”with my heart pounding so loudly, i looked directly at roma and asked, “and did he tell you not to bring an apple tomorrow because he was sent to another camp?”“how on earth could you possibly know that?”i took her hands in mine and answered, “because i was that boy, roma.”for many moments, there was only silence. we could not take our eyes from each other, behind which, as the veils of time lifted, we recognized the soul. finally, i said, “roma, i don t ever want to be separated from you again. now i am free, and i want to be together with you forever. dear, will you marry me?” i saw the same twinkle in her eyes that i used to see as roma said yes.on valentines day, 1996, i brought roma to the oprah winfrey show because i wanted to tell her on this national program what i felt in my heart every day: “darling, you fed me in the concentration camp when i was hungry. and i am still hungry, for something i will never get enough of: your love.”10. which of the following 請(qǐng)閱讀下面短文,并按照要求用英語寫一篇150詞左右的文章。taking babies on their flights can be unbelievably discouraging for parents. theyre often faced with the passengers who may get annoyed. stares, sighs, complaints and shakes of the head are just a few things that keep parents from looking their fellow passengers in the eye. therefore, some parents try to make it easier for their fellow passengers by handing out goodie bags as a beforehand apology usually filled with some candy and a set of ear plugs(耳塞). going with the bag is a note like this:hi stranger!my name is andaqi. i will be 4 months on january 15th and this is my first flight.ill try to be on my best behavior, but id like to apologize in advance if i lose my cool, get scared or my ears hurt. im also at the beginning stages of teething so i dont always feel good. i know im just a baby but i want you to enjoy this flight as well.my mom, niqelle, packed you this goodie bag with a few treats.there are also ear plugs in case my first public serenade isnt as enjoyable to you as it is to my mom.have a great flight and thanks for understanding!andaqi & niqellethis immediately went viral online. some think its a nice gesture and theyre just trying to be nice a good instinct in these tense times. however, others think differently as babies should not need to apologize for being babies. 【寫作內(nèi)容】1. 用約30個(gè)詞概括上述短文的主要內(nèi)容;2.
