高二年級開學之初英語考試試題一、 閱讀理解:60A Most of my friends speak several languages. My friend Hans Kimmel, for example, speaks three languages German, French and English. And my friend Pavlov speaks four languages Russian, French, Spanish and English. Then there is Charles Zhou. His native language is Chinese, but he speaks three or four other languages fluently. I do not understand it. They speak, read and write all those languages, and I only know one language English. Why cant I speak any foreign languages? Am I stupid to learn a foreign language? Maybe it is all a question of home and environment. My parents do not speak any other languages, so of course we speak English at home. But look at Hans. His father is German and his mother is French. So he speaks two languages at home. And look at Johns family. His father is Russian and his mother is Spanish. So they speak two languages at home. Perhaps it is a question of geography, too. I live in the United States, and I can travel hundreds of miles with only one language English. But it is different for Hans in Europe. He lives in Germany, but in a few hours he can travel to France, or to Italy, or to Holland, or to Denmark. So of course he hears other languages all the time. And he needs other languages. I am studying Italian this term at the university, but I am not learning very much Italian. I can not practice it at home or in restaurants or in stores. I only speak it three hours each week in the classroom. Thats all. The rest of the time I speak English. Maybe I should go to Italy for a few months. Then perhaps I could really learn Italian. 1. The writers native language is _. A) Russian B) Italian C) English D) GermanBMany a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that theres a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “Youve got to want to write,” I say to them, not want to be a writer.” The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the US Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿者), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me a room in a New York apartment building. It didnt even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadnt got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years, I wasnt going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test-even though it meant living with uncertainly and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and any one with a dream must learn to live there.6. He read a great many scientific books and wrote a number of exciting books about the things which he thought that scientists and inventors would one day be able to do. Years later, many of the things really happened. At that time, however, his stories seemed like fairy tales.Jules Vernes most famous book is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.(A league is an old word meaning a distance of about three miles). In those days submarines had not been invented but he described an underwater ship very like a modern one. Many of the things Jules wrote about in his books more than a hundred years ago to look into the future, however, were surprisingly exact. In his book From the Earth to the Moon he wrote at the age of about forty, three men and a dog made a journey around the moon in a hollow ship fired from a gun. After going around the moon, they returned to the earth and splashed down into the sea not far from where the first real moon traveler landed in July, 1969.11. Families and friends gather to eat and give thanks for their blessing. Thanksgiving Day is really a harvest festival. This is why it is celebrated in late fall, after the crops are in. But one of the first thanksgivings in America had nothing to do with a good harvest. On December 4, 1619, the Pilgrims from England landed near what is now Charles City, Virginia. They knelt down and thanked God for their safe journey across the Atlantic. The first New England Thanksgiving did celebrate a rich harvest. The Pilgrims landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts,in 1620. They had a difficult time and the first winter was cruel. Many of the Pilgrims died. But the next year, they had a good harvest. So Govemor Bradford declared a three-day feast. The Pilgrims invited Indian friends to join them for their special feast. Everyone brought food.In time, other colonies (殖民地)began to celebrate a day of Thanksgiving. But it took years before there was a national Thanksgiving Day. During the Civil War, Sarah Josepha Halepersuaded Abraham Lincoln to do something about it. He proclaimed (宣布) the last Thursday of November 1863 as a day of Thanksgiving.Today, Americans celebrate this happy harvestfestival on the fourth Thursday in November. We dont know exactly how this festival came into being. Some believed that it honored Easter, the goddess of spring time and sunrise. Her name comes from the word“east”, where the sun rises. Every spring, northern European people celebrated the Festival of Easter to honor the awakening of new life in nature. Later, Christians(基督教)related the rising of the sun to the Resurrection of Christ(耶酥的復活)and to their own spiritual(精神的)rebirth. On Easter, eggs are painted with bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring. They use these eggs to take part in Easteregg rolling contests or give them to others as gifts. The Easter bunny is another representative of this festival. The Easter bunny came for preChristian(公元前)times. The rabbit, a very fertile(多產(chǎn)的)animal, was a natural symbol of new life.
