7、 history of the USA and of the world as well. It was drafted by Thomas Jefferson and adopted with a number of minor changes on July 4, 1777, by the representatives of,the 13 colonies at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. In this public document the colonists in America solemnly proclai
8、med their independence from British rule. It marked the beginning of a new nation: the United States of America, and therefore July 4 has become the national birthday.,This great document falls into two parts. The first part tells of the rights that belong to everyone and the second part recounts th
9、e wrongs the British did against the colonies. These were charges against George III, King of England.,George Washington,George Washington,George Washington(1732-1799) won a lasting place in American history as the “Father of the country”. For nearly 20 years, he guided his country much as a father
10、cares for a growing child.,In three important ways, Washington helped shape the beginning of the United States. First, he commanded the continental Army that won American independence from Great Britain in the Revolutionary War. Second, Washington served as president of the convention that wrote the
11、 United States constitution. Third, he was elected the first president of the United States.,Abraham Lincoln,Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was one of the truly great men of all time. He led the United States during the Civil War(1861-1865), which was the greatest crisis in U.S. history.,Lincoln helped
12、 end slavery in the nation and helped keep the American Union from splitting apart during the war.
