1、Analysis of View of Marriage in D. H. Lawrences The RainbowINTRODUCTIONMarriage is a significant stage in human beings life. View of marriage is considered to be a significant criterion for weighting the level of social development and progress of civilization (Xu and Gong 84). The relationship betw
2、een men and women is one of the hottest topics in many literary works such as Pride and Prejudice, Gone with the Wind, Wuthering Heights, etc. As one of the best-known writers of the 20th century, D. H. Lawrence is famous for his depiction of gender relationship. His masterpiece The Rainbow describe
3、s three generations of the Brangwen family: Tom and Lydia; Anna and Will; and Ursula and Anton. The different views of marriage of the main characters vary with the development of the society. This essay tries to analyze the views of marriage of the three generation and tries to identify the element
4、s that result to the changes of the views of marriage. And this essay maintains that social environment and personality have great effect on the views of marriage of the main characters; and the harmonious marriage should be the combination of body and spirit.THE VIEW OF MARRIAGE OF THE FIRST GENERA
5、TIONAs the first generation, Lydia and Tom possess the most traditional view of marriage of the Brangwen family. Their marriage is quite stable although there is little spiritual communication between Lydia and Tom. Lydia is a Polish widow. She has two marriages in her lifetime: the former one is ge
6、tting married with a Polish patriot Lensky; the latter one is getting marriage with a British farmer Tom Brangwen. In her first marriage, Lydia is dominated by Lenskyshe became his slave, he was her lord, her lord (Lawrence Chapter 9); and She did not exist, then, just as his attribute (Lawrence Cha
7、pter 9). Under the dominance of Lensky, Lydia lost herself and became the private object of Lensky. Therefore Lydia tells Ursula I hope it will be somebody who will love you for what you are and not for what he wants of you (Lawrence Chapter 9). Lydia does not want her granddaughter to fall into the
8、 same trap again. After her ex-husbands death, Lydia went to England. As a Polish refugee, Lydia always feels the foreignness and aloofness of England (Lawrence Chapter 2). Her feeling of foreignness does not disappear even though she marries a native British. Since Lydia is a foreigner, the differe
9、nce of two languages sets barriers between the transnational couples definitely. It is impossible for Tom and Lydia to communicate with each other as freely as they can. Although they have harmonious sexual life, there is always distance and silence between them after their physical contact (Lawrenc
10、e Chapter 2). Tom Brangwen knows little about Lydias previous life in Poland. Whenever Lydia talks about her past experience in Poland, Tom Brangwen feels a distance between them, something strange and foreign and outside his life (Lawrence Chapter 2). He can not share the same feeling as Lydia at a
11、ll. Besides, when Lydia casts her mind back, Tom feels that he was a peasant, a serf, a servant, a lover, a paramour, a shadow, a nothing(Lawrence Chapter 2). Although Tom is Lydias husband, he is an outsider in her life to some degree. In spite of their difference and the barriers, Tom and Lydia ar
12、e the nearest and dearest “strangers”. It is clear that Tom and Lydias home is far from the outside world at the very beginning of the novel. Although a canal connects the collieries and the valley, the Marsh was shut off from Ilkeston, and enclosed in the small valley bed and Still the Marsh remain
13、ed remote and original (Lawrence Chapter 1). The Brangwen family was fortunate enough. The Marsh was just on the safe side of civilization, outside the gate(Lawrence Chapter 1). The Brangwen family escape from the invasion of industrialization and urbanization. Tom and Lydia lives in idyllic and iso
14、lated life. They are tied to their land. No matter how much estrangement between them, they still rely on each other. Tom cannot live without Lydia. Although there is little love affection, Tom knows how important a wife is he had grace at the bottom of him, which told him, that above all things, he
15、 did not want to lose her, he was not going to lose her (Lawrence Chapter 2). Lydia cannot live without Tom as well. As an outsider of England, Lydia feels unsettled in this country. But Tom Brangwen gives her a new family and gives her another two children with whom she seemed to lose connection wi
16、th her former self. She became now really English, really Mrs Brangwen (Lawrence Chapter 2). When Tom died in the flood, Lydia feels cold and single. Mrs Brangwen was unsettled. She could not sit all the evening peacefully, as she could before.She never went to her husbands grave. She spoke of him s
17、imply, as if he were alive. Sometimes the tears would run down her face, in helpless sadness (Lawrence Chapter 9). Although Tom and Lydia lack the soul communication in their life, they possess the most pure and simple affection (Wang 20). It is much better to say that there is domestic affection be
18、tween Tom and Lydia rather than romantic love. At all events, authough Tom and Lydias marriage is not the most ideal one but is a successful one (Wang 22). The idyllic environment keeps their marriage pure and stable.THE VIEW OF MARRIAGE OF THE SECOND GENERATIONAnna Lensky and Will Brangwen are the second generation. Their marriage is a failure and a tomb where their dreams are buried. Both of them want to control each other and become the winner in the marriage. There is li
