2、1812.Hisfatherwasaclerkinthenavypayoffice,whowaswellpaidbutoftenendedupinfinancialtroubles.In1814DickensmovedtoLondon,andthentoChatham,wherehereceivedsomeeducation.John,Dickens,continuallylivingbeyondhismeans,wasfinallyimprisonedfordebtattheMarshalseadebtor'sprisoninSouthwarkin1824.1,ear-oldChar

3、leswasremovedfromschoolandsenttoworkataboot-blackingfactoryearningsixshillingsaweektohelpsupportthefamily.CharlesconsideredthisperiodasthemostterribletimeinhislifeThischildhoodpovertyandadversitycontributedgreatlytoDickenslaterviewsonsocialreforminaacnodunhtirsycompassionforthelowerclass,especiallyt

4、hechildren.Dickens'scareerasawriteroffictionstartedin1833whenhisshortstoriesandessaysappearedinperiodicals.HisSketchesByBozandThePickwickPaperswerepublishedin1836.InthesameyearhemarriedthedaughterofhisfriendGeorgeHogarth,CatherineHogarth.ThePickwickPaperswerestoriesaboutagroupofratheroddindividu

5、alsandtheirtravelstoIpswich,Rochester,Bathandelsewhere.Dickens'snovelsfirstappearedinmonthlyinstallments,includingOliverTwist(1837-39),whichdepictstheLondonunderworldandhardyearsofthefoundlingOliverTwist.AmonghislaterworksareDavidCopperfield(1849-50),whereDickensusedhisownpersonalexperiencesofwo
