21、theessenceofancientChinesephilosophies,harmonyhasbeendeeply-rootedinthemindsoftheChinesepeople.Ontheonehand,ithascontributedtotheuniquecontinuityofChinesecivilization.Ontheother,Chinesepeoplebecametoomuchcontentedwiththeirachievementstodesireanyfurtherchanges.Asglobalizationdeepens,itisboundtoaffect

22、ouridealofharmony.First,globalizationurgesChinatospeedupitsmodernization,whichthreatensourregardfortheharmonybetweenManandNature.Forinstance,manydamsandhydropowerstationsarebeingbuiltforeconomicbenefitsattheexpenseofthewell-preservednaturalhabitats.However,ecologicalmalpracticeofsuchkindgoesagainstt

23、henotionofharmoniouscoexistenceinancientChinesephilosophies.Morethan2,000yearsago,longbeforetheconceptofenvironmentalprotectioncameintobeing,DuJiangWeir,agreatirrigationprojectwasbuiltinsouthwesternChinasSichuanprovince.Itsucceededbothincontrollingfloodsandinfacilitatingtheagriculturewithoutposingat

24、hreattotheenvironment.Moreover,globalizationhasbroughtwithitintensecompetition.Traditionally,moderationisagoldenprinciple,presidingoverinter-personalrelationsinChina.Today,however,motivatedtocometothetop,somepeoplebecomesoself-centeredthattheychoosetosacrificelove,friendshipandevenfamilyties.Lastbut

25、notleast,diversecultureshavemetinChinaasaconsequenceofglobalization.Therefore,aclashofculturesbecomesinevitable.Unfortunately,thepastdecadeshavewitnessedahugelossofculturalheritageinChina.IncitieslikeBeijingandXian,hundredsofcentury-oldChinese-stylehousesarebeingdemolishedtomakeroomforskyscrapers,sh
