4、 help you see something they dont. Because too many people never recognize our greatest freedom, which also happens to be our greatest source of strength. And because its not recognized, its not used. What is great freedom, this great source of strength? Its our ability to choose.It wasnt until I wa
5、s a junior in college that I began to fully appreciate this as one of the keys to life. Something happened in one of my classes that made me view life differently. I attended the University of San Francisco, a Jesuit School (耶穌會的教會學(xué)校, and was required to take philosophy every semester. The Jesuits,
6、a scholarly order of Catholic priests, were very big on philosophy(耶穌會士是天主教神職中的一個學(xué)術(shù)等級,他們教授的哲學(xué)課占很大的比重。. They told us that before we went out into the world, they wanted to teach us to think. And they meant it. We were challenged daily to think about God, life, the world, and our place in it. We were
7、required to write papers about the meaning of life and the reason for our existence. We also debated about right and wrong, and about good and evil. It was heavy stuff, but it was great training. We learned to better understand life, to accept it as it is, and to deal with it more effectively. And w
8、e did, in fact, learn how to think.On that particular day in class we were debating the existence of God. It had gone on for quite some time, when one of my classmates challenged the teacher with a question Id heard many times. He asked, “If God is so good and so powerful, how come he allows all thi
9、s suffering? Why didnt he just make us so we can be healthy and happy all the time?” The teacher seemed to have been waiting for that one, and Ive never forgotten his answer. “If God had created us that way,” he said, “wed be nothing more than puppets. Hed be pulling the strings, and wed have absolu
10、tely no power of our own. Its true, we wouldnt have to experience pain and hardship. But without them, wed also never know the real triumphs and joys of life. Thered be no reason to find a meaning or a purpose for ourselves. Wed be nothing more than mindless, programmed robots. God did a lot better
11、than that. He created us instead with a free will. He gave us life, and then he gave us the freedom to decide for ourselves that well do with it. He gave us the power to choose our own way.”The freedom to decide, the power to choose what a great lesson in life that was! Yet, how unfortunate it is th
12、at so many people never recognize this great freedom or exercise this great power. Ive been guiltyof it a few times myself, despite that valuable lesson in college. Sadly, we dont always apply what weve been taught. I remember not too many years ago when my life seemed completely out of whack. I was blaming circumstances, rotten luck, and other people. Then I came across the Henry Ward Beecher quote at the beginning of this chapter, and I was reminded that Id been born with a free will. It wasnt bad circumstances, bad luck or bad people that were causing my unhappiness. It
