He was Born in Portsmouth(樸茨茅斯), England

2、,Over his career he edited(編輯) a weekly journal(期刊) for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas(中篇小說) and hundreds of short stories and non-ficton(非小說類文學(xué)作品) articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an intelligent letter writer.Charles was an English writer and social critic.He created some of

3、 the worlds most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period(維多利亞時(shí)期).His works are intended to expose(揭露) and criticize all the poverty,injustice,hypocrisy(虛偽) and corruption(腐化) of the 19th-century England, particularly London.Characters

4、Oliver Twist (奧利弗 退斯特) The novels protagonist(主人公). He is an orphan born in a workhouse(貧民習(xí)藝所), and Dickens uses his situation to criticize public policy toward the poor in 1830s in England. Though he is treated with cruelty(虐待) and surrounded by coarseness(粗暴) for most of his life, he is a pious(虔誠

5、的), innocent(單純的) child, and his charms(魅力) draw the attention of several wealthy benefactors(恩人). His true identity is the central mystery of the novel.Fagin (費(fèi)金) Fagin takes in homeless children and trains them to pick pockets for him. He is also a buyer of other peoples stolen goods. He rarely co

6、mmits crimes himself, preferring to employ others to do such thing. Nancy (南希) A young lady and one of Fagins former child pickpockets. Nancy is also Bill Sikess lover. Her love for Sikes and her sense of moral decency(正派) come into conflict when Sikes abuses Oliver. Despite her criminal lifestyle,

7、she is among the noblest characters in the novel. In the end, she gives her life for Oliver when Sikes murders her for revealing Monkss plots.(陰謀)Mr. Brownlow (布朗羅先生) A well-off, erudite(博學(xué)的) gentleman who serves as Olivers first benefactor. Throughout the novel, he behaves with compassion(憐憫) and c

8、ommon sense and emerges as a natural leader.Agnes(艾格尼絲)(艾格尼絲) - Olivers mother who died after giving birth to Oliver. The only thing she left was a locket(金屬小盒) with her name inscribed. Mr. Sowerberry(蘇厄伯爾)(蘇厄伯爾)- A coffin(棺材) maker.Jack Dawkins(杰克(杰克 道金斯)道金斯)- “Artful Dodger”(逮不著的機(jī)靈鬼) is a young ac

9、complished thief who finds Oliver on the road to London and introduces him to Fagin.Monks(蒙克斯)(蒙克斯)- Olivers elder brother(同父異母) , dont split(分享) his inheritance(遺產(chǎn)). Mr. Sikes (賽克斯)(賽克斯) Another evil character who is a member of Fagins gang. Who kill Nancy.Rose Maylie(羅斯(羅斯 梅里)梅里) -The adopted niec

10、e(侄女) of Mrs. Maylie who turns out to be Olivers Aunt. She is kind, loving, and a great joy in Olivers life. plotOliver is born in a workhouse in a small town about 70 miles from London, England in the early part of the 19th century. His mother dies almost immediately after his birth. Nobody knows w

11、ho she was, but the doctor notices that she wasnt wearing a wedding ring (scandalous!).(極不道德的)Oliver is brought up at a “child farm” in the country until he is about eight years old. At this point, the parish officials(教區(qū)干事) running the child farm decide its time for him to start working, and they s

12、end him back to the workhouse. But Oliver commits the unpardonable(不可原諒的) offense of asking for more food when he is close to starving, so the parish officials offer five pounds (a pretty good amount of money) to anyone whos willing to take Oliver on as an apprentice. The parish officials eventually

13、 send Oliver off with a coffin-maker. At the coffin-makers shop, Oliver isnt treated much better than he was at the workhouse or the child farm. The coffin-maker, Mr. Sowerberry, isnt so bad, but his wife, Mrs. Sowerberry, and the other apprentice, Noah Claypole(諾亞 卡拉普萊), have it in for Oliver from

14、the start. Oliver gets in trouble for knocking Noah down . After being abused some more, Oliver decides to set out for London on foot.When hes almost there, he runs into an odd-looking young man named Jack Dawkins (better known as The Artful Dodger). The Dodger buys him lunch and offers to introduce

15、 him to a gentleman in London who will give him a place to stay. Once in London, it quickly becomes clear to the reader (but not to Oliver) that the Dodger and his friends are an unsavory(令人厭惡的) bunch. The old “gentleman,” Fagin, trains kids to be pickpockets, and then he sells off what they steal.

16、But Oliver doesnt realize whats up until hes actually out with the Dodger and another one of the boys, named Charley Bates(查理 貝茨). Oliver sees the pair steal the pocket handkerchief(手帕) out of a nice-looking old mans pocket. When Oliver turns to run away, the nice-looking old man sees him run and ye

17、lls, “stop, thief!”O(jiān)liver is tackled(摔倒) in the street, but by then the nice old man (his name is Mr. Brownlow) has taken a better look at him. He realized that Oliver looks too sweet and innocent (and terrified) to be a pickpocket. In fact, Oliver isnt so much a pick-pocket as he is a very sick lit

18、tle boy. So Mr. Brownlow takes Oliver home and cares for him until hes well. Unfortunately. Fagin, the Dodger, Nancy, and Bill Sikes (another criminal) are worried that Oliver will rat them out to the police, so they keep a watch on Brownlows house. One day, when Brownlow entrusts(交托) Oliver with so

19、me money and an errand(差事) to run in the city, Fagin and the criminals nab the poor kid once again. Nancy feels guilty and steps in(插手) to defend Oliver when Fagin tries to smack(摑) him around.Fagin keeps Oliver shut up in a dreary(陰郁的) old house for weeks, all the while still trying to turn him int

20、o a criminal. How long can a nine-year-old hold out? Not long afterwards, Bill Sikes and another thief say they need a small boy to help them break into a house outside of London; Fagin volunteers Oliver. The plan goes awry(出岔子) when the servants of the house wake up and catch Oliver in the act of s

21、neaking in. The servants dont realize that Oliver is there against their will, and was actually about to wake up the household to warn them about the robbers. So poor Oliver takes a bullet and is left behind when the rest are all running away.Fortunately, Oliver is picked up by the people who shot h

22、im, a family that turns out to be as nice as Mr. Brownlow. They become Olivers caretakers. Meanwhile, Fagin is at his wits end(智窮計(jì)盡) wondering what happened to Oliver. He lets slip(無意中說出) that a mysterious man named Monks offered to pay him hundreds of pounds to corrupt(腐化) the young boy. Nancy pret

23、ends not to know whats going on, but secretly resolves to help Oliver, and to figure out why Monks is so keen on having Oliver turn to crime.While Fagin and the criminals distress, Oliver learns to read and write with his new friends, the Maylies. Hes also reunited with(重聚) his first friend, Mr. Bro

24、wnlow. Fagin and his gang are still trying to track Oliver down. Monks has managed to get hold of and destroy one of the few surviving tokens(籌碼) of Olivers parentage(身世). Nancy finds out about it and gets in touch with Rose Maylie to warn her about Monkss plot with Fagin. Unfortunately for Nancy, B

25、ill Sikes (her lover) finds out about it and brutally(殘暴地) murders her. Sikes tries to escape, but hes haunted(縈繞在心頭) by what hes done. Eventually, hes killed while trying to escape from the police: he falls off a rooftop while hes trying to lower himself down, and inadvertently(不經(jīng)意地) hangs himself.

26、Meanwhile, Mr. Brownlow has managed to find Monks. Mr. Brownlow was an old friend of Monkss father and knows all about him. As it turns out, Monks is actually the older half-brother of Oliver, and was trying to corrupt Oliver so that hed secure(獲得) the entire family inheritance himself. Monks choose

27、s to admit to everything rather than face the police.Oliver ends up with whats left of his inheritance, is legally adopted by Mr. Brownlow, and lives down the road from the Maylies. Everybody lives happily ever after. Except for Fagin, who is arrested and hanged, and Monks, who dies in prison.What I

28、 learn In the novel, though the young Oliver again and again fell for(受騙) conspiracies of those thieves, who tried to torture(折磨) Olivers body and poisoned Olivers heart intensely, he always lived on and tried hard to seek for his own life. Then I realized what support him all through were actually beliefs. In the most cases, what you believe is what youll become. Believe that you are unlimited, that you can do anything you commit to doing, and when you do, your accomplishments will know no bounds(無限制). You control your bel
