7、udents are in I.B. programs. .The first is the primary years program. This is for children ages three to3 twelve . They begin to learn about the ideas of people in other parts of the world.The middle years program is for students between the ages of eleven and sixteen. They study languages, mathemat

8、ics and4 science as well as arts, technology and physical education . This program is designed to help students make connections between the different areas of study. They are also urged to take part in5 local activities so they can be good citizens. .The diploma program is for sixteen to eighteen y

9、ears old. It is two years of study to prepare for college or6 university. They study languages, a social science, an experimental science, mathematics and the arts.They must pass six examinations to complete the program. Students who pass7 receive a special International Baccalaureate certificate. I

10、t is accepted by universities around the world. I.B. students also satisfy the requirements of their local and national educational systems. The International Baccalaureate Organization says about thirty universities offer8 financial aid to graduates of its programs. .More than one thousand five hun

11、dred schools offer I.B. programs. The number9 continues to grow. Last month, a school in Croatia began to offer the middle years program. And a school in the Philippines started to teach the diploma program.Other nations that offer I.B. programs include Bangladesh, 10 Britain, China, India, Indonesi

12、a, Mozambique, Vietnam and Spain. In the United States, there are more than four hundred I.B. diploma programs. Also, there are forty-nine middle school programs and thirty primary school programs. .WHY IS WRITING SO IMPORTANTWriting influences the way we thinkWriting forces us to confront issues, t

13、o define and redefine our own feeling and positions, and enables us to express ourselves to others in more effective ways.Writing contributes to the way we learnOnce you begin to write summaries and responses while reading, you will be forced to really understand what you are reading, connect them a

14、ll together, and have a much better overview of the subject. This is what is probably meant by “making a thick book thin.Good writing leads to success in college and careerThe purpose of liberal arts education is to lay a broad and solid foundation for more advanced and more specialized training in

15、the future. A broad-based education will lead to greater creativity and more fully developed individuals. On a more practical level, the broader vision would also enable one to engage in interdisciplinary research more productively.Writing enriches personal growthOn a personal level, writing enables

16、 us to reflect deeply on our own experience, to examine critically our most basic assumptions, and to be in touch with our innermost selves. In a way, writing is a self-discovery process. It would enable us to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves as well as society, people, and life in general.W

17、hat is good writingWhat is good writing, anyway? Different cultures using different languages may come up with very different answers to the question. Indeed, even different individuals may have different standards, tastes or expectations. However, as far as English is concerned, a set of basic char

18、acteristics, which is believed to be present in all good writing, has been promoted by educators in English-speaking countries:.What is good writingUnity-all parts or elements of the writing constituting an organic and harmonious wholeCoherence-all parts or elements well connected to show clear logi

20、styleWhile these good old values are still relevant, todays discussion of good writing focuses on a different set of concepts.Good writing is good thinkingGood writing leads to good writing, and muddy thinking can only result in muddy writing. As simple as that. Writing is a thinking process; it is

21、not making a big deal out of nothing, the so-called moaning and complaining loudly when one is not sick. Good writing should be substantive, really having things to say. Not only having things to say, but also having insightful things to say about the topic.Good writing involves thoughtful revisionW

22、hen you read writings published in newspapers, magazines, masterpieces by great writers, you may be wondering how they could have written so beautifully yet so effortlessly! They are geniuses. They are cut differently. But geniuses are few and far between. The truth is for the overwhelming majority

23、of writers, it is ninety-nine percent hard work and one percent inspiration.Good writing achieves a clear purposeGood writing must achieve your intended purpose. If you want to write about how to make dumplings, your reader should get everything he or she needs to know about how to make dumplings, f

24、rom the necessary ingredients to step by step instructions. If your purpose is to convey the sublime and soul-awakening beauty of the morning sun bursting out of the horizon in the misty Huangshan Mountain in the Anhui Province, you should describe it in such a way that your readers should be able t

25、o visualize the scenery.Good writing expresses ideas clearlyGood writing reflects good thinking, and good thinking needs to be put in precise, concise, and lucid prose. An important task for revision is to trim all the deadwood, pruning all the redundancies, wordiness, and confusing and misleading ambiguities. .Analyze your audience in terms of your social relationsWhenever you write, you are interacting with other members of the society.
