Fist language transfer is an important research subject in the study of second language. Through the prevailing study, we all know that the first language has a very important influence

2、 on second language acquisition; in addition, it is a vital influential element. Especially shows in the process as well as the result of second language acquisition. Thus, a large number of linguists have made much profound research and have put forward various hypotheses. Based on the previous res

3、earch, in this paper, Im going to talk and find out the role of first language in the second language acquisition.Key words: L1 role SLA = 1 * ROMAN I.Introduction The first language transfer is a common phenomenon, which generally refers to when learners apply forms and rules of their first languag

4、e into their second language. Just taken a Chinese student for example, his second language is English. During his study of English he may express much “Chinglish”. Such as, I recently bought a dictionary. Here will soon build a big hospital. Of course, some of people may think this phenomenon is re

5、lated to learners cognition, however, he apply forms and rules of first language indeed. That is to say, it is true that first language have influence on second language acquisition. We are familiar with a Chinese saying” every coin has two sides”. Since everything has two sides, it is easy for us a

6、cknowledge first language have positive and negative influence on second language acquisition. In terms of this point, this paper will start from positive effect and negative effect to discuss the influence on the second language acquisition. According to my research, I have found positive transfer

7、and negative transfer in the second language acquisition with the help of observational approach and experimental method. After research, I have a general understanding of first language transfer. I believe it will benefit me a lot in my future teaching. I will try my best to guide my students to fi

8、nd a good way to study second language; helping them eliminate the negative transfer and encouraging them take advantage of positive transfer. In that guideline, it will easy for them acquire English and will get a satisfactory study result. = 2 * ROMAN II.Literature review In the last 60 years, man

9、y linguists had done much research about first transfer in second language. According to their research, they give different viewpoint. For example, Corder taken language transfer as an interaction strategy, which means borrowing, he emphasized that borrowing is just a kind of language phenomenon ra

10、ther than process of learning or the characteristics of language structure. Faerch and kasper thought that language transfer is a psychology process, second language learner use their mother tongue to understand a new language .Schacter objected the viewpoint of Faerch and Kasper, he thought that la

11、nguage transfer was a constraint in the language processing. Odlin(1989: 27) thinks “Transfer is the influence resulting from the similarities and differences between the target language and any other language that has been previously acquired (and perhaps imperfectly acquired)” . Also, of course, t

12、here are still more linguists show their point of view. Such as Vildomec(1963)、Gass & Selinker(1983)、Kellerman & Sharwood Smith(1986)、Ringbom(1987)、Dechert & Raupach(1989)、 they take an important place in the development history of first language transfer, therefore. There is no doubt that their con

13、tribution to the research as a milestone. As for later study, Jarvis & Pavlenko propose something new, the two linguists, in the shoulder of predecessors study result, make a conclusion and put forward their own opinion is that “The influence of a persons knowledge of one language on that persons kn

14、owledge or use of another language”. “First language transfer not only influence learners study speed and ultimate result, but also affect their way of study”. According to predecessors research, it is believe that language transfer in many ways, it can transfer L1 to L2 or L2 to L3. It also can in

15、an opposite way, which means L2 transfer to L1. In addition, it has impact on language form, language structure, and syntactic structure. In some linguists research, believing in a certain context environment, transferability is determined by language transfer and other factors. Language transfer ha

16、s been developed through four steps, the first step: 1950s to 1960s, language transfer had taken as explanation which affects leaners study process and had a dominant place in the second language acquisition theory. It had a position as important as behaviorist learning theory. Second step: 1960s to

17、 1970s, Because of Chomskys viewpoint of universal grammar, many linguists disagree with the theory of language transfer, the position of behaviorist learning theory shook by much attack in foreign language learning, the usage of language transfer had been depreciated. They had confronted much diffi

18、culty. Third step: 1970s to 1980s, language transfer was being a hot topic in the field of linguist again, proposing of theory about language transfer and proving it from the way of social, circumstance, psychology, connotation and perspective of process. Making people have a more intense understand

19、ing of language transfer, the Fourth step: studying language transfer happen in the brain and giving exact psychological explanation. The statement all above is the literature review about the history development language transfer. = 3 * ROMAN III.Research Im going to study the influence of language

20、 transfer. Ill divide it into two aspects, positive impact and negative impact. In my study, I use two approaches as assistant to finishing the study. Observational approach:If we truly want to understand the language acquisition, we must observe it cautiously. Collection in the natural scene of nat

21、ural communication material is a fundamental base of language research. We need to share the result of language studying in order to scientific progress. Introspection is a good way for linguists and scientists to enhancing themselves.Experimental method:One of the cognitive linguists pioneer Geogre

22、 Miller once said“some of my friends doesnt believe human have two hands and two feet, unless you prove it by doing an experiment. Of course, the statement is a little excessive. But if we want to study the role of input and practice in the language acquisition, we need to recorder learners input pr

23、operly. Therefore, it is a tradition to study the acquisition process of second language within a short period of contacting second language in an experimental condition. Firstly, in my understanding, negative impact means you make some mistakes in the study process of second language. Here are some

24、 results Concluded from my research:Chinese students feel difficult to distinguish voiceless consonant and voice consonant. Such as, a) l -r glass- grass b) l - n line-nineChinese and English have much difference in stress. So Chinese learners may confused by English stress. Taken basketball and din

25、ing hall for example. Chinese students like putting stress in the last syllable, but in English the stress in the first syllable.First language transfer has influence in the syntactic structure. There are some English expressions: a) I have a book. b) He has a book c) Did you see a film yesterday? d

26、) I have been here for a year. However, some Chinese student have following expressions:I have book. b) He have book. c) You yesterday see film? d) I have come here for a year.(4) First language transfer has interference in semantic. Look at the following examples: Chinese English 開車(ki ch) drive a

27、car 開機(jī)器(j q) operate a machine But some Chinese students make wrong expressions.Chinese English 開車(ki ch) open a car 開機(jī)器 open a machine More instances: Chinese English 消除(xioch)代溝 destroy generation gap 刻薄(kb)的嘴 sharp mouth 經(jīng)濟(jì)(jngj)支持 economic supportThus, from the above instance, we know that we ca

28、nnot adopt translation of word to word, it will make much ambiguity. Obviously, during the study of second language, we should acknowledge the semantic discrimination between Chinese and English and try to use native English expression naturally. As for my future teaching, I should avoid guiding my

29、students to make such mistakes.Secondly, According to my research, positive impact plays a role in voice, syntactic and semantic.It is commonly believe that English and Chinese are consist of consonants and vowel, as for this point, Chinese students are easily to understand and learn the English pho

30、netic symbol ,because they can learn English words with the help of Chinese “pinyin”. Especially for primary school students, they are more naturally and easily to read English words.In some degree, English and Chinese is similar in syntactic structure; they are declarative sentence, interrogative s

31、entence, negative sentence and exclamatory sentence. Therefore, Chinese students are tending to be easier to acquire. Taken my learning experience for example, I think it is easy to learn the sentence structure of English. For example:He is a student.He often helps me study English.Im practicing dra

32、wing the bow.He has been bowed with age.As for these examples, it looks similar in Chinese sentence structure at the first sight, latter; it is naturally to understand and use it without much effort.Owing to similarities in Chinese and English, in my future teaching I should guide students to pay at

33、tention to them so as to get the twice result with the half effort. Thus, students can have a solid fundamental level about the acquisition of second language. And their learning motivation will be encouraged in my proper guideline. = 4 * ROMAN IV.ConclusionTo conclusion, there is no doubt that first language plays a very important role in the process of second language acquisition. Therefore, for second language learner, you should know following effective learning strategies: A. engaging prior understandings; B. integrating facts with conceptual frameworks; C. taking active
