4、ands in his youth .In 1385,the 14-year-old Zheng he was made a servant at the royal palace of the man who later became the Emperor Yongle. Between 1405-1433,the treasure fleet set sail across the Indian Ocean seven times .In all ,at least 317 ships and 27000 men were under his command. Zheng He s fi

5、rst stop was in what is today a part of Vietnam .He made several voyages during his lifetime and contributed greatly to the science of navigation in China. Emperor Yongle ordered him to sail to “the countries past the horizon” to demonstrate the power of the Ming court and collect all kinds of treas

6、ures from foreign countries .Marco Polo (1254-1324)Marco Polo is an Italian traveller whose writings gave Europeans their first knowledge of life in the Far East. He went to India, SE Asia, and China, and he spent several years working for the Chinese Emperor Kublai Khan.Venetian traveler who explor

7、ed Asia from 1271 to 1295. His Travels of Marco Polo was the only account of the Far East available to Europeans until the 17th century. Marco Polo12541324 James Cook was a British captain. He made maps of Australia and New zealand James Cook (1728-1779) was the greatest Britain navigator. Cook enli

8、sted in the Royal Navy in 1755. Sent to America during the French and Indian War, he made soundings of the St. Lawrence River in preparation for the British attack on Quebec. Cooks notable charts of the St. Lawrence earned him a commission as surveyor of Newfoundland. In 1768 he was promoted and sen

9、t to the Pacific with an astronomical observation group where he surveyed Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. On his famous second expedition (1772-75) he explored Antarctica. In 1776 he undertook his third and final voyage in which he explored the West coast of North America and tried to locate a p

10、assage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. On this voyage he discovered the Hawaiian Islands (which he named the Sandwich Islands), and sailed up the coast of North America through the Bering Straits to the Arctic Ocean.
