He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise(人間天堂), The Beautiful and Damned(美麗與詛咒), The Great Gatsby(了不起的蓋茨比) (his best known)

3、, and Tender Is the Night(夜色溫柔). A fifth, unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon(最后的一個巨頭), was published posthumously(身后,死后). 4、z Age: The Jazz Age is the nickname in America of the decade of the1920s, beginning from 1919 to the Crash at the end of 1929. It refers to the “Twenties” of this century. These ten years were, for Americans, a time of carefree(無憂無慮的) prosperity(繁榮), isolated from the worlds problem, bewildering(令人困

5、惑的) great social change, and a feverish(狂熱) pursuit(追求) of pleasure. These were the ten years when the First World War was just over, when new inventions and manufacturing (制造業(yè))techniques greatly changed.Summary of the bookThe Great Gatsby is a story told by Nick Carraway, who was once Gatsbys neigh

6、bor. As the story opens, Nick has just moved from the Midwest to West Egg, Long Island, seeking his fortune as a bond salesman(股票推銷員). Shortly after his arrival, Nick travels across the Sound to the more fashionable East Egg to visit his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband, Tom, a very rich man wh

7、om Nick had known in college. There he meets professional golfer(高爾夫球員) Jordan Baker. The Buchanans and Jordan Baker live luxurious(奢靡的) lives, contrasting sharply in sensibility and luxury with Nicks more modest and grounded lifestyle. When Nick returns home that evening, he notices his neighbor, G

8、atsby, mysteriously standing in the dark and stretching his arms toward the water, and a green light across the Sound.Summary of the bookOne day, Nick is invited to accompany Tom to meet his mistress, Myrtle Wilson, a middle-class woman whose husband runs a modest garage and gas station in the valle

9、y of ashes. After the group meets and journeys into the city, Myrtle phones friends to come over and they all spend the afternoon drinking at Myrtle and Toms apartment. The afternoon is filled with drunken behavior and ends with Myrtle and Tom fighting over Daisy, his wife. Drunkenness turns to rage

Upon Gatsbys invitation, Nick attends one of the extravagant parties. There, he meets with Jordan Baker, as well as Gatsby himself. Gatsby, it

11、 turns out, is a gracious host, but yet remains apart from his guest an observer more than a participant as if he is seeking something.Summary of the bookGatsby and Nick become friends and Jordan and Nick begin to see each other regularly. Nick and Gatsby journey into the city one day and there Nick

On that same day, while having tea with Jordan Baker, Nick learns the amazing story that Gatsby told her the night of his party. Gatsby, it appears, is in love with Daisy. They met years earlier when he was in the

13、 army but could not be together because he did not yet have the means to support her. In the later years, Gatsby made his fortune, with the goal of winning Daisy back. He bought his house so that he would be across the Sound from her and hosted the parties hoped that she would notice. It has come ti

14、me for Gatsby to meet Daisy again, face-to-face, and so, Gatsby asks Nick to invite Daisy to his little house.Summary of the book16.10-18.08Summary of the bookThe day of the meeting arrives. Nicks house is perfectly prepared. When the former lovers meet, their behaviour is slightly nervous, but shor

15、tly, the two are once again comfortable with each other, leaving Nick alone. As the afternoon progresses, the three move the party from Nicks house to Gatsbys, where he takes special delight in showing Daisy his meticulously(精心地) decorated house, and Daisy is deeply interested in Gatsbys possession.

16、Summary of the book36;30-37;20Summary of the bookMoving back to the present, we discover that Daisy and Tom will attend one of Gatsbys parties. Tom, of course, spends his time chasing women.After Daisy leaves, Gatsby tells Nick of his secret desire: to recapture(重溫) the past. Gatsby, the idealistic(

17、理想主義) dreamer, firmly believes the past can be recaptured. Gatsby then goes on to tell what it is about his past with Daisy that has made such an impact on him.Summary of the book Gatsby and Daisys affair begins to grow and they see each other regularly. As the party prepares to leave for the city, Tom fetches(拿來) a bottle of whiskey. Tom, Nick, and Jordan drive in Gatsbys car, while Gatsby and Daisy

19、 drive Toms car. Low on gas, Tom stops Gatsbys car at Wilsons gas station, where he sees that Wilson is not well. Like Tom, who has just learned of Daisys affair, Wilson has just learned of Myrtles secret life although he does not know who the man is and it has made him sick. Wilson announces his pl

20、ans to take Myrtle out West, much to Toms distress. Tom has lost a wife and a mistress all in a matter of an hour. Summary of the book Tom begins to badger Gatsby, questioning him as to his intentions with Daisy. Tom keeps harping(反復(fù)嘮叨) on Gatsby until the truth comes out: Gatsby wants Daisy to admi

21、t shes never loved Tom but that, instead, she has always loved him. When Daisy is unable to do this, Gatsby declares that Daisy is going to leave Tom. Tom, though, understands Daisy far better than Gatsby does and knows she wont leave him: His wealth and power will triumph(戰(zhàn)勝) over Gatsbys newly fou

22、nd wealth. In a gesture of authority, Tom orders Daisy and Gatsby to head home in Gatsbys car. Tom, Nick, and Jordan follow.Summary of the bookAs Toms car nears Wilsons garage, they learn that Myrtle Wilson, Toms mistress, has been hit and killed by a passing car, and it appears to have been Gatsbys

23、 car. Nick, now disgusted by the behavior of the people with whom he has been on friendly terms, meets Gatsby outside of the Buchanans house where he is keeping watch for Daisy. With a few questions, Nick learns that Daisy, not Gatsby, was driving the car, although Gatsby says he will take all the b

24、lame. Nick, greatly worried by all he has experienced during the day. Summary of the bookOne day morning, while at work, Nick is unable to concentrate. He receives a phone call from Jordan Baker, but is quick to end the discussion. He plans to take an early train home and check on Gatsby.Summary of

25、the bookWilson is sad with his wifes death,and goes to look for the driver who killed Myrtle. Nick retraces(回憶) Wilsons journey, which placed him, by early afternoon, at Gatsbys house. 26、ne seems concerned with Gatsbys death. Daisy and Tom mysteriously leave on a trip and all the people who so eagerly attended his parties, drinking his wine and eating his food, refuse to become. Even Meyer Wolfshiem, Gatsbys business partner, refuses to mourn his friends death. A telegram from Henry C. Gatz, Gatsbys father, indicates he will be coming from Minnesota to bury his son.
