telephotolens.Butsometimes,thatiseasiersaidthandone.Thiswasoneofthosetimes.

AsElliandIcookeddinner,ayoungmalepolarbearwhowasplayinginanearbylakesniffed,andsmelled

ourgarlic

bread.Thehungrybearfollowedhisnosetoourcamp,whichwassurroundedbyahighwire

fence.Hepulledandbit

thewire.Hestoodonhisbacklegsandpushedatthewoodenfenceposts.

Terrified,ElliandItriedallthebeardefenseactionsweknew.Weyelledatthebear,hitpotshard,andfired

blankshotgunshellsintotheair.Sometimesloud

noises

likethesewillscarebearsoff.Notthispolarbearthough—hejustkepttryingtoteardownthefencewithhismassivepaws(爪子).

Iradioedthecampmanagerforhelp.Hetoldmeahelicopterwasonitsway,butitwouldbe30minutes

beforeitarrived.Makingthebestofthiscloseencounter(相遇),Itooksomepicturesofthebear.

ElliandIfearedthefencewouldn’tlastthrough30moreminutesofthebear’spunishment.Thecampmanager

suggestedIusepepper

spray.Thesprayburnsthebears’eyes.butdoesn’thurtthem.SoIapproachedouruninvited
