Halloween’soriginsdatebacktotheancientCelticfestivalofSamhain(薩溫節(jié)).TheCelticpeoples(凱爾特人)livedover2,000yearsago.IntheareathatisnowIreland,theUnitedKingdom,andNorthernFrance.FortheCelticpeoples,theNewYearwascelebratedonNovember1stofeveryyear.ThisdatemarkedtheendofSummerandthebeginningofWinter.Thistimeofyearwasoftenassociatedwithhumandeath.TheCeltsbelievedthatonthenightbeforethenewyear,theboundarybetweentheworldsofthelivingandthedeadbecameblurred(模糊)asthedeadsearchedfortheafterlife(來(lái)世).Thus,onthenightofOctober31st,theycelebratedSamhain,whenitwasbelievedthattheghostsofthedeadreturnedtoEarthtocausemischief(惡作劇)andtrouble.

Tocommemorate(紀(jì)念)theevent,peoplebuilthugesacredbonfires(篝火)whereanimalsandcropsweresacrificedtotheGodforprotectionandtohelpscareghostsaway.TheCeltsalsoworecostumestodisguisethemselves,inanattempttoconfusethespiritsroamingtheEarth.TheCustomofGhostFestivalonJuly15,peoplefloatRiverLanternstoPayhomage(致敬)tothedead.Peopleusedtomakelanternswhichmadeofwoodcoloredpaper.Thenputacandleinthelanterns.Letthecandlelightguidedeadsouls.Peoplealsoprayforagoodharvestandspreadthesuppliesintothefields.People,afterburningpaper,cutcoloredpaperintopieces,andthenwrappedinthecrops.SimilaritiesPeoplecanmisstheonewhogotoheaven.Twofestivalconnectwiththeghost.Thelightappearsintwofesitival.Thelightalwaysmeanshopeandcourage.TheOriginoftheSpringFestival
