CurtisWhitsonhadrafteddowntheArroyoSeco,ariverincentralCalifornia,severaltimesbefore.Thisyear,CurtisWhitsonknewthewater-fallwascoming.Hefiguredhewouldgetoutofhisraftintotheshallowwater,getdowntherocksalongropesoneithersideofthefalls,andcontinueonhisway,ashehadonaprevioustrip.Butthisyearwasdifferent.Heavysnowandspringrainshadturnedtheusuallymanageablefallsintosomethingfierce.Andthisyear,insteadofhisfriends,Whitson’scompanionswerehisgirlfriend,KrystalRamirez,andhis13-year-oldson,Hunter.Asthethreeofthemapproachedthefallslateintheafternoonofthethirddayoftheircampingtrip,Whitsoncouldtellfromtheincreasingroarofwaterinthenarrowingcanyon(峽谷)thattheywereinserioustrouble.Therewasnowaythey’dbeabletogetdowntherocksasplanned.

“Thewaterwasjustroaringthroughtherewithtremendousforce,”recallsWhitson,45.Theyhadnosmartphoneservice,andtheyhadn’tseenasinglepersoninthepastthreedays.AndWhitsonknewthatthey’dbesharingthegroundtherewithrattlesnakesandmountainlions.Ashewasthinkingwhattodo,Whitsonhitonabitofluck---heheardvoicescomingfromtheothersideofthefalls.Heyelled,butthesoundoftherushingwaterdrownedhimout.

“Wehavetogetthesepeopleamessage,”Whitsonthought.Hegrabbedastickandpulledouthispocketknifetocarve“Help”init.Thenhetiedaropetoitsothepeoplewouldknowitwasn’tjustanystick.Hetriedthrowingitoverthefalls,butitfloatedawayinthewrongdirection.

“We’vegottodosomething!”Whitsonyelledtohisson.“Havewegotanythingelse?”Thenhespottedhiswaterbottle.Whitsongrabbeditandcarved“Help!”onit.Ramirezalsoremindedhimthathehadapenandpaperinhisbackpack.Whitsonknewitwasaslimhope.Buthewrote“6-1519:00Wearestuckhere@thewaterfall.Gethelpplease”andpushedthenoteintothebottle.Thistime,histhrowoverthewaterfallwasperfect.
