Abstract

Studtiteisararemineralthatwasfirstdiscoveredin2002intheJackpileMine,NewMexico,USA.Themineralhasauniquechemicalcompositionandadistinctcrystalstructure.Studtiteistheonlyknownnaturalmineralcomposedofhydrogenperoxide,whichmakesitahighlystudiedmineralduetoitspotentialapplicationsinthefieldsofmaterialsscienceandenvironmentalremediation.Thispaperpresentsacomprehensivereviewofthediscoveryofstudtite,itsproperties,anditspotentialapplications.

Introduction

In2002,aresearchteamfromSandiaNationalLaboratories,USA,discoveredanewmineralthatdefiedallexpectations.ThemineralwasfoundintheJackpileMine,whichisauraniumminethatproducesarangeofrareminerals.However,themineralthatwasdiscoveredwasunlikeanyotherfoundatthemine.Afterathoroughanalysis,theresearchersconfirmedthatthemineralwasaperoxidecompoundcomposedofhydrogenperoxide,uranylions,andwatermolecules.Thismineralwasnamedstudtiteinhonorofitsdiscoverer,StephenStudt,amineralcollectorandgeologistfromNewMexico.

Studtite'spotentialasacatalystisnotlimitedtoenvironmentalremediationapplications.Studieshavealsoexploreditsuseinchemicalreactionsforindustrialapplications.Forexample,astudyconductedbyLietal.(2016)foundthatstudtitecouldbeusedasacatalystinthesynthesisofbenzimidazolederivatives,aclassoforganiccompoundsusedintheproductionofpharmaceuticals.
