Graduationisallaboutchange.AndatMichiganthatmeansit’snotonlyaboutthechangeinyou,it’saboutthechangesyouwillcontributetoinsociety.

Inthefallof2023,whenmanyofyoustartedasundergraduateshereatMichigan,ourworldwasadifferentplace.

MeToowasnotyetahashtag.Theeventhorizonofablackholehadneverbeenimaged.Andmidtermvoterturnoutonuniversitycampusesacrossthecountrywasjust19percent.

Eachoftheseexamples,intheirownway,demonstratestheoftenlonganddifficultpathtochange.

TheMeTooMovementwasfoundedin2023byactivistandsexualassaultsurvivorTaranaBurke.Burkewantedtoprovideaplaceforsurvivorstotelltheirstories,forempathy,andforhealing.

Shespentmorethanadecadeperseveringandadvocatingonthebehalfofthosewhosestoriesaremarginalized,ornottoldatall.Thentheideashestartedwentviral,transformingintoglobalconversationand,wemusthope,change.

Theimageoftheblackholeeventhorizonpresentedlastmonthrequiredtwoyearsofcomputeranalysis,datafrom8observatoriesonthreecontinents,andateamof200scientists,whichincluded2023U-MElectricalEngineeringgraduateKatieBouman.

Wehavenowseenwhathadpreviouslybeendescribedasun-seeable,andpushedthefrontiersofknowledgetothedarkestregionsoftheuniverse.

Andduringthe2023midtermelection,TuftsUniversityreportsthatyouthturnoutincreasedineverystateforwhichtheyhavedata.In27states,itrosebydoubledigits.

Plus,precinctsthatserveBigTencampusessawtheirturnoutincreasebyanaverageof24percentagepoints.Thisismorethandoubletheincreaseinnearbyareas,indicatingthatstudentsmadetheirvoiceheard.HigherturnoutwasagoaloftheBigTenVotingChallenge.Welldone!

Dukeacceptedmeasan‘earlydecision’candidateand,forthefirsttime,Ifeltseen,andheardandvalued.Oneofthefinestuniversitiesinthenationwaswillingtobetonme.Iwas,andIremain,eternallygratefulfortheopportunitytoattendandgraduateintheTrinityClassof1979.MyDukedegreeandourBlueDevilfamilyhaveopenedmoredoorsthanIcouldhaveimaginedandstoodinsupportwhenIneededitthemost.

Graduates,today,westillfindourselvesinthesamemorassofexclusionandintoleranceIexperiencedallthoseyearsago.Thehighdegreeofacrimonyisunyieldinganddiscouraging,butIwanttomakesureyouhearthis:Discouragementdoesn’thavetobedebilitating.Ifanything,discouragementshoulddriveyoutoopenyourowndoorsanddesignyourownfuture.

Andjustrememberwhenyouopenthosedoors,therewillbepeopleontheotherside.Someofthemwillbecheerleaders,andsomeofthemwillbecritics.Thechallengesyoufaceonyouruphillclimbwilloftencomewithanaudience,becausetherealityisthis:Adversitydoesn’thappenalwaysinprivate.

Ijoinyourprofessors,familymembersandfriendsinexpressingmyutmostprideaswecelebrateyouraccomplishmentsasthenewestgraduatesoftheUniversityofMichigan.

Graduates,youdidit!

Eachoneofyouearnedaplacehere–andyoumadethemostofit.

Iknowthatformanyofyou,theroadtogetherewasnoteasy.Perhapsyoutraversedsomepotholesalongtheway.

Ihaveitonthehighestauthority,however,thatthesepotholesareabouttobefilled,andtheroadsaregoingtogetfixed…

Butforthoseofyouwhoarefirst-generationstudents,militaryveterans,orfromcommunities,citiesandtownsthatdon’tsendmanystudentstoMichigan–Ihopeyouareespeciallyrelishingthisday.

AsmembersoftheClassof2023,allofyouhaveconqueredtherigorsofourcurricula.

Youexceledinyourstudies,yourresearch,youradvocacyandyourservice.Youfoundwaystonavigatecentralcampus,whenwedecidedtorenovatetheLSAbuildingandtheUnionatthesametime.Andyouevensurvivedapolarvortex–withnotone,butTWO,daysofcanceledclasses.

Sincewearehere,youmusthaveusedthattimetostudy.

Atatimewhensomanypeoplearedispiritedbythedeepdivisionsinourcountry,whenourpoliticsseemsodysfunctional,ourgraduatesaretakingupthecauseofpublicservicebyrunningforofficeinrecordnumbers.Theworldneedsthem,andtheirwillingnesstoservegivesmehope.

AsMargaretnoted,thispastyear,ItraveledtomeetalumniwhoarehelpingtostrengthencommunitiesinDetroit,Dallas,andHouston;inMiami,Phoenix,andNewYork;inLosAngeles,SanFrancisco,andSanDiego–inChina,Japan,andEngland–peoplewhoarenotonlylaunchingandbuildingbusinessesandcreatingopportunity,butpeoplewhoarealsoteaching,volunteering,advancingimportantlegislation,workingfornon-profits,andservingthepublicgood.
