ltytothis“revolution."OnregainingtheirfreedomtheyusedtheReichswehr[army]todefeatthecoup.Hitlerfled,butwassoonarrestedandsentencedtofiveyearsintheLandsbergfortress.Heservedninemonths.TheputschmadeHitlerknownthroughoutGermany.InprisonhedictatedtoRudolfHesstheturgidMeinKampf[mystruggle],filledwithanti-Semiticoutpourings,worshipofpower,disdainforcivilmorality,andstrategyforworlddomination.ItbecamethebibleofNationalSocialism.UnderthetutelageofHitlerandGregorStrasser,aidedbyJosefGoebbelsandfrom1928byHermannGoering,thepartygrewslowlyuntiltheeconomicdepression,beginningin1929,broughtitmasssupport.Hitler5sRisetoPowerToGermansburdenedbyreparationspaymentstothevictorsofWorldWarI,andthreatenedbyhyperinflation,politicalchaos,andapossibleCommunisttakeover,Hitler,frenziedyetmagnetic,offeredscapegoatsandsolutions.Totheeconomicallydepressedhepromisedtodespoil“Jewfinanciers,“toworkershepromisedsecurity.Hegainedthefinancialsupportofbankersandindustrialistswithhisvirulentanti-Communismandpromisestocontroltradeunionism.Hitlerhadakeenandsinisterinsightintomasspsychology,andhewasamasterofintrigueandmaneuver.AfteracquiringGermancitizenshipthroughthestateofBrunswick,heraninthepresidentialelectionsof1932,losingtothepopularwarheroPaulvonHindenburgbutstrengtheninghispositionbyfalselypromisingtosupportChancellorFranzvonPapen,wholiftedthebanonthestormtroops(June,1932).WhentheNaziswereelectedthelargestpartyintheReichstag(July,1932),HindenburgofferedHitlerasubordinatepositioninthecabinet.Hitlerheldoutforthechiefpostandforsweepingpowers.ThechancellorshipwentinsteadtoKurtvonSchleicher,whoresignedonJan.28,1933.AmidcollapsingparliamentarygovernmentandpitchedbattlesbetweenNazisandCommunists,Hindenburg,ontheurgingofvonPapen,calledHitlertobechancellorofacoalitioncabinet,refusinghimextraordinarypowers.SupportedbyAlfredHugenberg,HitlertookofficeonJan.30.HitlerinPowerGermany'snewrulerwasamasterofMachiavellianpolitics.Hitlerfearedplots,andfirmlybelievedinhismissiontoachievethesupremacyoftheso-calledAryanrace,whichhetermedthe“masterrace."Havinglegallycometopower,heusedbrutalityandsubversiontocarryouta“creepingcoup“totransformthestateintohisdictatorship.HeblamedtheCommunistsforafireintheReichstagonFeb.27,andbyfanninganti-CommunisthysteriatheNazisandNationalistswonabaremajorityofReichstagseatsintheelectionsofMar.5.AftertheCommunistshadbeenbarred,andamidadisplayofstormtrooperstrength,theReichstagvotedtogiveHitlerdictatorialpowers.FromthefirstdaysofHitler5suThirdReich”(foritshistory,seeGermany;NationalSocialism;WorldWarII)politicalopponentssuchasvonSchleicherandGregorStrasser(whohadresignedfromtheNazis)weremurderedorincarcerated,andsomeNazis,amongthemErnstRoehm,werethemselvespurged.Jews,Socialists,Communists,andotherswerehounded,arrested,orassassinated.Government,law,andeducationbecameappendagesofNationalSocialism.AfterHindenburg'sdeathin1934thechancellorshipandpresidencywereunitedinthepersonoftheFuhrer[leader].HeilHitler!becametheobligatoryformofgreeting,andacultofFuhrerworshipwaspropagated.In1938,amidcarefullynurturedscandal,HitlerdismissedtoparmycommandersanddividedtheirpowerbetweenhimselfandfaithfulsubordinatessuchasWilhelmKeitel.AsHitlerpreparedforwarhereplacedprofessionaldiplomatswithNazissuchasJoachimvonRibbentrop.ManyformerdoubtershadbeenconvertedbyHitler'sbolddiplomaticcoups,beginningwithGermanrearmament.HitlerbulliedsmallernationsintomakingterritorialconcessionsandplayedonthedesireforpeaceandthefearofCommunismamongthelargerEuropeanstatestoachievehisexpansionistgoals.ToforestallretaliationheclaimedtobemerelyrectifyingtheonerousTreatyofVersailles.BenitoMussolinibecamehisallyandItalygraduallybecameGermany5ssatellite.HitlerhelpedFrancotoestablishadictatorshipinSpain.OnHitler'sordertheAustrianchancellorEngelbertDollfusswasassassinated,andtheAnschlussamalgamatedAustriawiththeReich.Hitlerusedtheissueof“persecuted”GermansinCzechoslovakiatopushthroughtheMunichPact,inwhichEngland,France,andItalyagreedtoGermanannexationoftheSudetenlandofCzechoslovakia(1938).WorldWarIIHitler'snonaggressionpact(Aug.,1939)withStalinallowedhimtoinvadePoland(Sept.1),beginningWorldWarII,whileStalinannexedLatvia,Lithuania,andEstoniatotheUSSRandattackedeasternPoland;butHitlerhonoredthepactonlyuntilhefounditconvenienttoattacktheUSSR(June,1941).InDec.,1941,heassumedpersonalcommandofwarstrategy,leadingtodisaster.Inearly1943herefusedtoadmitdefeatatthebattleofStalingrad(nowVolgograd),bringingdeathtovastnumbersofGermantroops.AsthetideofwarturnedagainstHitler,hismassexterminationoftheJews,overseenbyAdolfEichmann,wasaccelerated,andhegaveincreasingpowertoHeinrichHimmlerandthedreadsecretpolice,theGestapoandSS(Schutzstaffel).FallofHitlerandtheThirdReichByJuly,1944,theGermanmilitarysituationwasdesperate,andagroupofhighmilitaryandcivilofficials(includingFieldMarshalErwinvonWitzlebenandKarlGoerdeler)attemptedanassassination.Hitlerescapedabombexplosionwithslightinjuries;mostoftheplotterswereexecuted.Althoughthewarwashopelesslylostbyearly1945,HitlerinsistedthatGermansfightontothedeath.Duringthef
